Improvement Suggestion for Water Chiller Package 1170TIC1050 Compressor Slide Valve Control

Problem Symptoms:
Slide Valve PID Controller 1170TIC1050 output oscillate (Hunting) when the controller was
transferred from Manual Mode to Auto Mode.

Problem Analysis:
During the manual operation of the slider valve the Load/Unload command of the operator is
going directly to the slider valve. The PID Controller 1170TIC1050 is by-passed but still in Auto Mode.
Because of this condition, the controller output goes to 100% if PV>SP or 0% if PV<SP. The controller
output can only be seen at the UCP panel and can only be change manually at UCP with an Engineering
Access Level.
Once the operator at CCR switched the control of the slide valve from Manual Mode to Auto
Mode, the controller gives a 100% or 0% command to the slider valve depending on the PV-SP condition.
This scenario causes an upset on the process and makes the controller to oscillate on a cyclic
degenerative manner.
We able to put the controller in Auto Mode because we manipulate the controller output
manually at UCP using an Engineering Access Level.

Problem Possible Solution:

In order to eliminate this problem, there is a need to modify the existing logic of the PID
controller. A kicker program should be added to let the PID controller output tracked the Slider Valve
actual position (1170ZI1050) during Manual Mode. With this additional program, bump less transfer
from Manual Mode to Auto Mode can be achieved and operator intervention to manually manipulate
the PID controller at UCP can be eliminated. This kicker program is usually a standard feature of a PID
controller with an Auto/Manual Mode function.
