DAIMLERCHRYSLER December 2006 Dealer Service Instructions for: Customer Satisfaction Notification F37 Torque Converter and Reprogram ECM/TCM Effective immediately all repairs on involved vehicles are to be performed according to this notification. Service Bulletins #21-009-06 and #18-023-06 have been cancelled, 2005-2006 (KJ) Jeepe Liberty NOTE: This notification applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 2.8L diesel engine (“5” in the 8" VIN position) and automatic transmission (sales code DGQ) built through November 2, 2006 (MDH 110214) IMPORTANT: Those vehicles that have already had this repair performed, as determined by our warranty records, have been excluded from this notification. IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this repair on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this repair on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process. ‘The transmission torque converter on about 11,200 of the above vehicles may fail. This can cause a rattling sound in the neutral 6r park positions and/or illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). Gontinued operation can result in transmission damage. eae © Copyright 2006, DaimlerChrysler Corporation’ All Rights Reserved Customer Satisfaction Notification F37 Page 2 Torque Converter and Reprogram ECM/TCM The torque converter must be replaced and both the ECM and TCM must be | reprogrammed. The repair involves a small reduction in engine torque to enhance | torque converter and transmission durability. Dealers should attempt to minimize customer inconvenience by placing the owner ina loaner vehicle if the vehicle must be held overnight. | A. Torque Converter PartNumber Description CECAF370 Torque Converter Each dealer, to whom vehicles in the notification were assigned, will receive enough torque converter packages service about 20% of those vehicles, | B. Authorized Modification Label IMPORTANT: Due to the likelihood that the required Authorized Modifications labels are already in your parts inventory, no labels will be distributed initially. Additional labels may be ordered as needed. Transmission Pump Kit IMPORTANT: Due to the small number of involved vehicles, no kits will be distributed to involved dealers. The following existing special tools may be required to perform this repair on 2005 model year vehicles: > NPN TechCONNECT PC or equivalent > CH2002 General Purpose Interface Bus Cable Assembly > CH6000A Scan Tool (DRBIIIp) > CH7000A/J1962 Cable with red DRBIII connector >» NPN TechCONNECT Workstation A. Vehicle Inspection 1. Ifthe Malfunction Indicator Lamp is set, retrieve the vehicle DTC’s as follows: a. Connect the CH9404 StarSCAN vehicle cable to the StarSCAN and the vehicle, b. From the “Home” screen, select “System View”. c. Record all DTC’s as shown. Customer Satisfaction Notification F37 Page 5 Torque Converter and Reprogram ECM/TCM 2. Perform the torque converter test as follows: a. Place the transmission selector in PARK (or NEUTRAL). b. Apply the parking brakes. c. Start the engine, . Step outside of the vehicle and listen for any unusual noise from the torque converter area. 3. Based on the results noted in Step 2, if the vehicle exhibits one or both of the following issues, continue to Section C — Transmission Flush, Torque Converter and Pump Replacement. Very few vehicles are expected to require this repair to be performed, > Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated with a DTC code of P0740. > The torque converter exhibits a rattle like noise in neutral or park. 4. Ifthe vehicle exhibits neither of the issues listed in Step 3, continue with Section B - Torque Converter Replacement. B. Torque Converter Replacement 1. Open the hood. 2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. NOTE: To enhance customer satisfaction, remember to reset the clock when you have completed the service procedure. 3. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist. 4, Remove the skid plates. 5. Paint-mark the transmission and transfer case propeller shafts at the axle companion flanges. The paint marks will be used for assembly alignment. 6. Remove the rear propeller shat. Disconnect the output speed sensor electrical connector from the transmission. 9. Disconnect the input speed sensor electrical connector from the transmission, ‘TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE & BRACKET 10. Disconnect the transmission ep solenoid/TRS assembly ‘CABLE & BRACKET electrical connector from the transmission, Figure 1 11. Disconnect the line pressure sensor electrical connector from the transmission. 12. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission position selector lever (Figure 1). 13. Disengage the transmission shift cable from the transmission cable bracket igure 1). 14. Remove the starter motor. 15. Remove the rubber access plug above the starter motor opening to expose the drive plate bolts. | 16. Remove the drive plate to torque converter bolts. . 17. Remove the exhaust isolators from the exhaust system hanger at the transmission mount crossmember. 18. Remove the transfer case as follows: | a. Disconnect transfer case position sensor electrical connector from the electrical harness. b. Disconnect transfer case shift cable at the range lever (Figure 1). Remove the transfer case shifter cable bracket (Figure 1). Disconnect transfer case vent hose. meas Secure the transfer case to a suitable transmission jack in accordance to the transmission jack manufacturer’s instructions. Remove nuts attaching transfer case to the transmission. ® ‘hh. Pull the transfer case and jack rearward to separate the transfer case from the transmission. i. Lower and remove the transfer case from under vehicle. Set the transfer case aside. 19. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack. Secure the transmission to the transmission jack according to the transmission jack manufacturer’s instructions. 20. Remove the transmission crossmember supporting the transmission completely from the vehicle. 21. Remove the transmission dipstick tube assembly. 22. Use special tool #9546 to disconnect both transmission fluid cooler lines at the transmission, 23, Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission. 24, Remove all bellhousing-to-engine bolts. 25. Carefully separate the transmission assembly from the engine block. 26. Lower the transmission and remove the transmission from under the vehicle. NOTE: Hold the torque converter in place during transmission removal. 27. Mark the location of any torque converter bolt lug to the bellhousing. 28. Carefully slide the old torque converter out of the transmission and return it to your parts department for core return.
