THE CURSE : Chapter 6

1. Awang found fish which has just died as a sacrifice.

2. After performing some spells with the ingredients in his spot, he sense something was evil
especially with Madhuri’s death.
3. Then he remembered the pontianak lady who went past him in the farm. She looked like Madhuri.
4. Azreen was shocked to learn from the old lady that Madhuri was murdered.
5. The old lady told her that she was gathering some branches when she heard a shout from the boy
who discovered Madhuri’s body.
a. She saw Madhuri lying with her back to a tree.
b.She had a gash across her side which could only be made by a blade and not any wild animals.
c. A few minutes later, Haji Ghani and a few of his relatives arrived.
6. Azreen could not understand why they have cover up Madhuri’s murder.
7. The old lady explained that
a. There would be endless talk and speculation
b. They would have no peace, no privacy
c. They might know who was the murderer but refused to investigate because it might reveal more
secrets than necessary.
d. That would bring more harm to the innocent and make them suffer.
8. The old lady told Azree to go home as it was getting dark.
9. She told her that the truth would be revealed with time.
8. Puan Fatihah entered the room where Madhuri used to sit.
9. She remembered how during a kenduri, Haji Ghani was attracted to Madhuri when she presented
a Syair with a few others.
10. He made his intention to marry Madhuri’s to her parents after a month and they agreed.
11. That night, Puan Fatihah’s life began to change.
12. She did not know whether things would return to the way they were before. Puan Fatihah believed
that she had lost everything to Madhuri; her silk, her husband and her life.- her sanity.
13. She snatched the silk from the seat that was once hers and walked angrily out of the room.

14. In the house, Azreen saw her mother in a daze.

15. She went to Madhuri’s room and saw torn pieces of Madhuri’s photograph.
16. She recalled that Madhuri was ten years old in the photographs. At that time :
a. She buried a frog in the mud and her sister advised her not to get into trouble with her father but
Azree splashed water on Madhuri.
b. Her father appeared and accused her of stealing mangosteens but she denied it. She said she had
picked them up from the ground.When her father wanted to cane her, Madhuri pleaded with her father
not to beat her and Azreen ran away. Later, her father caned her.
c. Then, Azreen refused to eat her dinner but her sister quietly left some kueh for her.
19. Back in the room,Azreen found more torn photographs of Madhuri in her drawer.
20. Her father saw her in the room and asked her to get out of the room. He told her not to touch
Madhuri’s things and not to go to the room without his permission. He looked a bit surprise to see the
torn photographs.
21. Azreen’s mother told her not to blame herself for her injured leg but to take care of her father
when she dies. She also told her that she was like her father in temper.
