LESSON B: SIMILES AND METAPHORS


Date: 3/14/11
Objectives:
1) Student will identify 5 out of 8 similes and metaphor within owl moon.
2) Student will write at least one metaphor and one simile that relates to the story.
Materials: Owl Moon, strips of paper, notebook paper

Opening
1. Review similes and metaphors via a Brain Pop video
a. Watch the video and then take the quiz

Presentation/Guided Practice
2. Explore Similes and Metaphors within the picture book Owl Moon
a. Tell the student to pay close attention to how the author writes. If she reads/hear a
simile or metaphor stop reading and write it down on a strip of paper.
3. When we finish reading the book discuss the purpose of the similes and metaphors

Independent Practice
4. Student will write one simile and one metaphor that relates to Owl Moon.
