Classification of Cutting Machines
STRAIGHT KNIFE CUTTER

Machine parts and their functions:

a) Blade

 Cuts the fabric laterally into a spread.

b) Sharpening device

 Produces degree of keenness in the cutting edge.

c) Blade drive

 Cutting blade is reciprocated vertically in the blade housing by the blade drive.
It’s driven by the motor’s drive.

d) Blade housing

 It’s anchored in the base plate.

  It supports the motor, operating handle and sharpeners

e) Blade guard

 It’s a safety device attached indirectly to the blade housing.

 It has two functions- safety and cutting quality.

 It prevents the cutter from accidentally cutting his positioning hand on top of the
spread.

f) Base plate

 The foundation that supports and helps balance the cutting mechanism.

 It guides the knife in relation to the table surface and elevates the spread off the
cutting table for contact with the blade.

g) Handle

 It moves the cutting machine or the cutter over the lines or area to be cut.

h) Power system

 It provides power to the drives for the motor drive to move blade drive which
drives the blade.

 HOT NOTCHERS
 When spreading synthetics or loosely woven knits, it is a common problem for the spread to
shift, resulting in distortion of the lay. By using the Hot Notcher to notch intermittently along
edge of the lay, the spread is held securely and can be shifted to the cutting area without
worry.

 Another useful application for the Hot Notcher is to sear a deep notcher into the spread
which covers the whole area of the table. This deep notcher allows the cutter to keep the
cutting machine base plate under the spread.

 Hot Notchers have been here from a long time. But now their time seems to be ending. Most
of the companies have stopped the manufacture of Hot Notchers and industries have
replaced them with laser equipped notching devices. The main problem that labor face while
using them is that perfect notch cannot be achieved by using them. If the blade overheats
then the notch may become too big and the lay may not be able to pass the quality standards.

Auto Track Falcon II

While similar in basic function to the manual Falcon

IV, Eastman's Auto Track Falcon offers the time-saving

advantages of automatic operation. The travel of the

Auto Track's cutting head across the track and

the elevating and lowering of the track-lifting mechanism

are motorized.

The knife may be activated by the operator either at the control panel or with the remote
control. The remote control enables the spreader to activate the Auto Track Falcon's cutting
cycle as soon as he or she is finished pulling the ply down the table.

The Auto Track Falcon utilizes the same powerful Falcon IV cutting head, operating in
conjunction with a .15-horsepower skate motor that drives the knife across the track.
