The PR Strategy

From Big Business to Small Farm

One man doubling as a manufacturing

manager and the owner of a small
Angus farm in Northeast Kentucky
shows the connections of PR between
the two forms of business.
PR at the Company
Public relations is used in just about every business
you can think of. Dave is a manager at the Sylvania glass
plant and knows the various ways PR is implemented.

Management is trained in employee relations and

crisis management every year. Their corporate staff has
in-house PR professionals that come and explain what
can help to improve all aspect of relations policies; like
management to employee, employee to customer, and
management to customer.
“We consistently see how important it is to have the PR
staff come in, afterward we see many new improve-
ments.” -Dave

Dave is a farmer out of Lawrenceburg, Ky. He has over 30

head of cattle and around 130 acres of farmland
At the Farm...
Dave and his wife Susan started their farm
almost 11 years ago with just two cows. They now
own three separate businesses. He began his
operation through networking with local farm-
ers and getting involved. It didn’t take long to get
started.

He started from the beginning with promot-
ing a healthy business in the cattle industry by
using honesty, outstanding customer service, and
hard work. PR is used in the cattle business in just
as many ways as big corporate chains, these guys
just do it themselves.

Every succesful farmer around him knows
how important their image is to the public eye,
because they are living around their customers,
not just trying to get a message out to a million
random people.
The Connection
When you hear about public re-
lations would you ever think farming?
Neither would I, until I payed atten-
tion to how they work and what they
do when it comes down to dealing with
their customers and other farmers.

The connections they make that
keep customers are unlike any other
form of business. It’s almost like a fam-
ily connection in the way that these men
cherish those they interact with. They’re
the best at putting consumers first and
they stick to that ideal. Today’s large
businesses could learn a lot from them.

Dave has seen both ends of the
spectrum and can vouch for that in
many ways. I hope you can take this and
understand even more how public rela-
tions tactics and insight of PR profes-
sionals come in so many forms and can
be found everywhere.
