Problem and Goal Statements
The AIAA Foundation Design/Build/Flight Competition Guidelines have been adopted with the intention to
compete.

Problem
• Mission #1 demands an high speed aircraft capable of completing the flight without any payload within the
shortest period of time.

• Mission #2 demands an aircraft with a convenient loading design (short loading time) and the ability to
secure the softballs internally. Unsecured softballs will contribute to a varying center of gravity of the aircraft,
greatly destabilizing the aircraft.

• Mission #3 challenges the design group in terms of the aerodynamics of the aircraft. The number of bats to
be carried externally give rise to additional drag component on aircraft, which the design team must take into
consideration while evaluating the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft.

TEAM GOAL
• Design and build a competitive propeller driven aircraft with well-balanced
characteristics, capable of completing the 3 mission tasks as defined by the AIAA
DBF competition guidelines.

Mission Definitions
Designed aircraft needs to be able to complete 3 specific missions assigned by DBF official.

Mission #1
• 2 lap ferry flight without payload
• Time recorded is the time taken to complete 2 laps of flight
• Mission score, M1=(Tref/Tteam)*(Wref/Wteam)*50

Mission #2
• 3 lap flight with 6 to 10 (decided by rolling dice) internally carried softballs
• Time recorded is the time taken to load/secure the softballs into the aircraft and for the loading crew to
return to the designated area
• Mission score, M2=(Tref/Tteam)*(Wref/Wteam)*100

Mission #3
• 3 lap flight with 1 to 5 (decided by team) externally carried aluminum bats in varying lengths/weights
• Time recorded is the time taken to complete 3 laps of flight (loading time not included)
• Mission score, M3=(Tref/Tteam)*(Nteam/Nref)*100

Tref =the fastest time recorded for any team Tteam =the time recorded for our team
Wref= the lightest weight recorded for any team that completes the particular mission
Wteam= the heaviest weight recorded for our team from ANY mission attempt
Fref = the largest amount of bats carried by any team Fflight = the amount of bats carried by our team

• Review on past year DBF competition entrees will be useful in identifying aircrafts of similar size, payload
carrying capability and mission objectives. Past design team aircraft parameters (weight, wingspan, aspect
ratio) will be compiled and translated into graph showing historical trend. Based on the data collected, our
team will be able to the predict basic design configurations of our competitors. That will help us in choosing
the most appropriate design approach and strategy.

• Analysis on DBF scoring equation will be conducted through sensitivity studies with various methods such as
the simple perturbation scheme to identify the priority parameter that we should focus on in both the design
and optimization phase.

• The analysis results obtained from the competition identification will also play a part in determining the
weights of different criteria in our decision matrices.
