WHY: Latino students make up just over 60,000 of the 132,000 students in San Diego
Unified School District, according to the California Department of Education.
Roughly half of those Latino students do not perform at grade level in math or
English language arts. Less than one-third of all Latino high school graduates
meet the University of California or California State University system
requirements.
