Definition:
“A literary composition (usually prose and short) on any
topic or subject.”

OR

“An essay is usually a short piece of writing which is quite often


written from an author's personal point of view. Essays can
consist of a number of elements, including political issues, learned
arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections
of the author.”

Features:
Three features are necessary in a good essay;

 Suitable subject matter


 Proper arrangement
 Adequate power of expression
Types:
 Reflective essay
 Narrative essay
 Descriptive essay
 Expository essay
 Imaginative essay

Organization:
 Decide on your topic.
 Prepare an outline or diagram of your ideas.
 Write your thesis statement.
 Write the introduction.
 Write the body.
o Write the main points.
o Write the sub points.
o Elaborate on the sub points.
 Write the conclusion.
 Add the finishing touches.

Method of Beginning:
To sum up:-

 Clearly define your subject in your own mind.


 Think over it, until ideas about it come into your mind and
write down the points on paper.
 Classify these points in groups under suitable headings,
rejecting any that are unsuitable.
 Arrange these headings in an outline.
 Fill in the outline, making a full outline.
 Now begin to write the essay, dividing it into paragraph.
 The essay should consist of introduction, body and
conclusion.
 Write in a simple, clear, direct and natural style.

Coherence:
Coherence is a “continuity of senses” and “the mutual access and
relevance within a configuration of concepts and relations”

Cohesion:
Cohesion is the grammatical relationship within a text or
sentence. Cohesion can be defined as the links that hold a text together
and give it meaning.
