Useful Info:
Planck's constant h = 6.626 x 10-34 J•s Rydberg's constant R = 1.097 x 107 m-1
8 -9 -10
c = 3.00 x 10 m/s nm = 10 m, Å = 10 m

Be Sure To Show All Of Your Work When Applicable (may use back of page).

1. (3 points) You admire the blue color of the sky above (λ = 473 nm), and say to
yourself, "Self, I wonder what might be the frequency (in s-1) of the electromagnetic
radiation I'm witnessing in that beautiful sky", and then you calculate it below:

ν = c / λ = (3.00 x 108 m/s) / (473 x 10-9 m) = 6.34 x 1014 s-1

2. (8 points) Ozone in the upper atmosphere absorbs light having wavelengths of 2200
to 2900 Å, thus protecting organisms on the Earth's surface from high-energy UV
radiation. What are the frequency and energy of the most energetic of these photons?
(see conversion factor for Å-to-meters under "Useful Info" above)

Most energetic = 2200 Å , so:

ν = c / λ = (3.00 x 108 m/s) / (2200 x 10-10 m) = 1.36 x 1015 s-1 , and
E = hν = (6.626 x 10-34 J•s)(1.36 x 1015 s-1) = 9.01 x 10-19 J

3. (5 points) The electron in a ground-state (n1 = 1) H atom absorbs a photon of

wavelength 97.20 nm. To what energy level does the electron move (n2 = ?) ?

1/λ = 1/(97.20 x 10-9 m) = 1.029 x 107 m = R [(1/n12) – (1/n22)] =

1.097 x 107 m-1 [(1/12) – (1/n22)]
0.938 = [(1/12) – (1/n22)], or -0.062 = -(1/n22), or 16 = n2, or n = 4
(You can also use the ΔE = -Rhc(etc.) equation.....then calculate λ from the ΔE)

4. (8 points) For each of the following atoms or ions, give the condensed electron
configuration.

(a) S = [Ne]3s23p4

(b) V = [Ar]4s23d3

(c) Fe3+ = [Ar]3d5

(d) Cu2+ = [Ar]3d9

5. (9 points) Arrange the following atoms in order of decreasing atomic radius and
increasing first ionization energy (IE1), and circle the one element with the most-negative
first electron affinity (EA1):
(a) Si (b) Cl (c) Ca (d) Rb (e) Ne

Decreasing Atomic Radius ------> Rb > Ca > Si > Cl > Ne

Increasing IE1 ---------------------> Rb < Ca < Si < Cl < Ne
Most negative EA1 -----> Cl
