• International Organization for Standardization

• World’s largest developer and publisher of International


Standards

• Network of national standards institutes of 163 countries, one


member per country , with a Central Secretariat in Geneva,
Switzerland, that coordinates the system
IMPORTANCE OF ISO STANDARDS
1. Bridging the Public and Private Sectors:

• The ISO structure, with one member institute per country,


facilitates exchange of information between regulators and
businesses.

• In many countries, the member institute is a governmental


entity, whereas in others it is a private entity.

• Enables ISO to develop standards and solutions that benefit


both the business sector and society as a whole, making
sure that one entity's interests are not prioritized over
another.
2. Role of Standards :

• "Standards make an enormous and positive contribution


to most aspects of our lives.”

• Whether a business manufactures goods or provides


services, when it meets standards relevant to its
industry, it ensures that positive characteristics such as
quality, durability, efficiency, safety and environmental
friendliness are reinforced.
ISO 9000

• The ISO 9000 family of standards


represents an international consensus on
good quality management practices. It
consists of standards and guidelines
relating to quality management systems
and related supporting standards.
ISO 14000

• The ISO 14000 family addresses various


aspects of environmental management.
Bureau of Indian standards

•Bureau of Indian standards(BIS) came into existence, through an


act of parliament dated 26th November, 1986, on 1st April, 1987.

•To broadened scope and more powers taking over staff, assets,
liabilities and functions of the Indian standard institute(ISI).

•The main functions of BIS include preparation and implementation


of standards, operation of certification schemes both for products
and systems,

• organization and management of testing laboratories, creating


consumer awareness and maintaining close communication with
international standards’ bodies.
Organizational network
• BIS headquarters at new Delhi.

•A network of 5 regional offices at Kolkata, Chennai,


Mumbai, Chandigarh and Delhi.

•Branch offices at Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar,


Bhopal, Coimbatore, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Guwahati,
Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kanpur, lukhnow, Nagpur, Patna, Pune,
Rajkot, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vishakhapatnam.

•All serve as effective links between state governments,


industries, technical institutions, consumer organizations of
the region.
Sectors of standards development
BIS engaged in formulation of Indian standards for the
following sectors:
•Basic and production engineering
•Chemicals
•Civil engineering
•Electronics and information technology
•Food and agriculture
•Mechanical engineering
•Management and systems
•Transport engineering
•Textile
•Water resources
•Special attention is given to multidisciplinary areas such as
energy conservation, environmental protection, rural
development.

•So far 17000 standards have been formulated in different


technology areas.

•The standards formulated fall in the following categories;


•Product specifications,
•Codes of practices, guidelines
•Basic standards
Technology assessment at
government level
E-commerce: applying IT to trade & commerce

Till 2003 lack of infrastructure facility has hindered the


progress of e-commerce.
Internet’s rapid growth & wide spread application &
utility.
A large number of new industries & MNCs have
appeared.
With new IT policy, lot of expectation of developments
in e commerce that will bring the global market place to
the potentially large market in the third world countries.
E-governance: Applying IT to
governance
Definition: giving Citizens the choice of when and where they
access government information and services.
Putting the Citizen at the center of government means taking a
delivery channel view.
This would mean using more and more of Electronics &
Information Technology in many of the government functions.
It means to fundamentally change as to how the Government
operates and this implies a new set of responsibilities for the
executive, legislature and the citizenry.
