    Obstructive and restrictive lung diseases can be distinguished based on their effects on lung volumes and flow rates. Obstructive diseases like asthma decrease lung volumes and flow rates but preserve the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC). Restrictive diseases decrease lung volumes and both FEV1 and FVC, but usually increase the FEV1/FVC ratio due to increased lung elasticity. They also decrease diffusing capacity through mechanisms like loss of alveolar-capillary units and thickened alveolar walls.
