PAST SIMPLE

When do we use the past simple?


PAST SIMPLE
 We use it when the action started and finished in the
past.

Examples:
I played football yesterday.
Marcia walked to school.
We watched a movie.
PAST SIMPLE
Subject + verb in past + complement

I played football.

BE CAREFUL!
There are irregular verbs:
 I went to your house. (go)

 She bought a book. (buy)

 We sang a song. (sing)


PAST CONTINUOUS
When do we use the past continuous?
PAST CONTINUOUS: AFFIRMATIVE
 We use it when the action started in the past, but has not
finished. It is a continuous action.

Examples:
I was listening to music.
She was talking to me.
We were studying English.
PAST CONTINUOUS
Gerunds (verb + ing)
Gerunds are formed by adding ing to a verb.

Open Opening
Go Going
Look Looking
Eat Eating
PAST CONTINUOUS: AFFIRMATIVE
Subject + was/were + verb in gerund (ing) + Complement

Uncle Henry was sitting on the doorstep.

She was looking at the sky too.

Prof. Jones and I were getting close to the National Weather Service.
PAST CONTINUOUS
Negative
Interrogative
PAST CONTINUOUS: NEGATIVE
 The past continuous uses the verb to be. If we want to form
the negative, we have to add not to this verb.

Subject + was/were + not + verb (ing) + complement.

We were not paying attention.

They were not looking.

He was not listening to me.


PAST CONTINUOUS: NEGATIVE
 We can contract was/were and not.

was not = wasn’t


were not = weren’t

We weren’t paying attention.

They weren’t looking.

He wasn’t listening to me.


PAST CONTINUOUS: INTERROGATIVE
 When we form the interrogative form, we have to invert
the order. Of course, we also have to add a question
mark (?).

Was/Were + subject + verb (ing) + complement?

Were you paying attention?

Was he reading a book?

Were they playing tennis?
