EXPERIMENT

THE EFFECT OF HEAT ON GASES

AIM

To study the effect

of heat on gases
MATERIALS

A drop of colored liquid,

ice cubes, hot water
APPARATUS

Round-bottomed flask,
capillary tube, rubber
stopper with hole, basin,
retort stand and clamp
PROCEDURE
1.Put the round-bottomed flask together
with the capillary tube containing a drop
of colored liquid into ice cubes.

2.Next, place the round bottomed flask

into a hot water. Observe the position
of the colored liquid droplet.
OBSERVATION

Flask The direction of movement of the

colored liquid droplet
In ice Moves upwards / downwards
In hot water Moves upwards / downwards
ANALYSIS

 What happened to the air in the round-

bottomed flask when it was put into ice
cubes?

The air in the round-bottomed flask

cooled / heated and contracted /
expanded
 What happened to the air in the round-
bottomed flask when it was put into hot
water?

The air in the round-bottomed flask

cooled / heated and contracted /
expanded
 Suggest how a dented ping pong ball
can be repaired. Give a reason for your
suggestion.

Submerged the ping pong ball in

_______ for a while. The air in the ball
_______ when _______ and pushes
against the dent and the dent is
repaired.
CONCLUSION

Gas _______ when heated

and _______ when cooled
