Ni Graphite
Nickel graphite abradable materials are well-known for clearance control coatings in the compressor section of turbine
engines against nickel alloy and steel components, with some products appropriate for use against untipped titanium
components (higher graphite content). Higher graphite content enhances lubricity; higher nickel content enhances
erosion resistance. Appropriate for service temperatures up to 480 °C (900 °F). For similar products, choose the
product by the OEM specifications required.

Polyester Fillers
Polymer materials are used for self-lubricating applications and to provide friability in clearance control coating
systems with service temperatures below 325 °C (600 °F). Controlled porosity is achieved through entrapment of
the polymer within the coating structure. For higher temperature applications, a post-coat burn-out of the polymer
material can be performed. Sulzer Metco polyester products are high quality, liquid crystalline polymers (LCP)
having consistent performance.

The CoMoCrSi alloys (Tribaloy family) are known for their excellent high-temperature sliding wear, self-lubricating
properties, corrosion resistance to reducing environments such as hydrochloric, formic and sulfuric acids and
resistance in non-oxidizing environments such as phosphoric acid, acetic acid and salt water. They are characterized by
molybdenum rich phases that are dispersed in a softer cobalt matrix. Appropriate for service temperatures up to 800 °C
(1470 °F).

Cermets
Cermets are blends of metals and metal oxide ceramics. The main use of these cermets is in thermal barrier or thick
clearance control applications where thermal expansion mismatch between the substrate and the coating must be
controlled. Cermets are usually intermediate coating layers that are applied between the bond coat and ceramic top
coat. Originally designed for turbine applications, they can be used in applications where severe thermal cycling can
cause issues for other coating systems.

Al2O3 (Pure)
Alumina is a wear resistant metal oxide ceramic that is chemically inert and stable at high temperatures. Key
applications are abrasion, sliding and erosive wear resistant applications where impact is not an issue. Medium to
coarse grades can be used as a cutting medium such as knife edge seals in turbine applications. High purity grades
(white alumina) exhibit excellent dielectric characteristics. The highest purity grades, such as Metco 6100, can be used
for tooling on electronic manufacturing equipment and biomedical implants.

Al2O3 3TiO2
Coatings have good resistance to abrasive wear, sliding wear, friction and oxidation up to 1100 °C (2040 °F). Coatings
are particularly suitable for applications in the textile or synthetic fiber manufacturing industries, where surface
resistance is required on parts used for the guiding and handling of thread. Can be used in many environments
including most acids and alkalis.

Coatings are recommended for abrasive wear, sliding wear and oxidation resistance for service temperatures up
to approximately 1100 °C (2040 °F) for fused and crushed products and up to 550 °C (1020 °F) for clad products.
Coating applications include hydraulic parts, plungers, shaft sleeves, mechanical seals, thread production parts
for synthetic fiber manufacturing. Can be used in acidic and alkaline environments. Somewhat lower hardness and
corrosion resistance than coatings of Al2O3 3TiO2.

Produces coatings with good friction characteristics that are appropriate for hard, bearing surfaces. Hardness is lower,
but more readily ground, than coatings with less titania content. Ground and polished coatings have low degree of
wettability and may be used to resist dilute solutions of common acids. Applications include pump components, shaft
sleeves, mechanical seals, thread guides and textile machinery components.

Cr2O3 (Pure)
Coatings of pure chromium oxide is are the most chemically inert and wear resistant oxides. They are insoluble in acids,
alkalis and alcohol environments. in the Sulzer Metco product portfolio. In general, these coatings should be used
below 540 °C (1000 °F). Very often, these coatings are laser engraved on anilox inking rolls. Other applications include
pump seal lands and seats, and rolls subject to sliding and abrasive wear.

TiO2 (Pure)
Coatings of titanium oxide produce coatings that are generally tougher, but with lower hardness, than coatings of
aluminum oxide, with moderate abrasive wear resistance. Soluble in alkalis and sulfuric acid, but resistant to attack in
many other environments. Slightly conductive; static electricity does not build up on the coating surface.

These materials have a composition that is similar to Monel, producing coatings with high strength and very resistant to
seawater, atmospheric corrosion, various acids and alkaline solutions.
Metco NiCu
Chemistry: Ni 30Cu
Form: Solid Wire
Process:
Ni Ti
This material forms an exothermic reaction during spraying for excellent bond to the substrate. Coatings are generally
used as bond coats that are corrosion resistant in alkaline conditions at temperatures up to 800 °C (1470 °F).

applications. May be used as a bond-coat for hydroxylapatite coatings.
Metco Titanium
Chemistry: Ti 99.8% +
Form: Solid Wire
Process:
Zn (Pure)
Used for the protection of iron and steel against corrosion both in atmosphere and when immersed in either fresh or salt
water. Small uncoated areas are protected electrolytically by zinc better than aluminum. Recommended as a primer on
surfaces that will be painted.
Metco Zinc

Form: Solid Wire Rolls-Royce plc MSRR 9507/106
Process:
Zn Al
Coatings provide better corrosion protection than pure zinc. Used to protect iron and steel structures against
atmospheric corrosion and in fresh or salt water environments. Recommended as a primer for surfaces to be painted.
Metco ZnAl
Chemistry: Zn 5Al
Form: Solid Wire

Sealers
Sealers are materials that penetrate the pores of thermal spray coatings to form a protective barrier to gases and
liquids. This is especially important in situations where a galvanic potential between the coating and the substrate is a
concern. Sealers are often recommended for porous coating systems, such as ceramics, that will be used in liquid or
atmospheric chemical environments, and for metallic coatings that have higher nobility than the substrate. Coatings
that are anodic with respect to the substrate may be sealed to improve coating service life.
Metcoseal AP
Environment: Many solvents, acidic and atmospheric environments, up to 205 °C (400 °F).

Masking Tapes
Sulzer Metco masking tapes are high grade and designed to withstand the temperatures and particle impact
associated with thermal spray processes. All can be used to protect substrates from both grit blasting and coating.

Masking Compounds
Liquid masking compounds prevent coating adherence on surfaces where it is not wanted. These products are
appropriate to mask geometries that are more complex or larger than areas easily masked using masking tapes. In
addition, masking compounds can be used to mask tooling.
Metco Anti-Bond
Form: Water-based, VOC-free, up to 315 °C (600 °F).
Process:
Grit
Relatively coarse, sharp clean abrasives are required for to prepare substrate surfaces for thermal spray applications.
Metcolite aluminum oxide grits are recommended for surfaces with a hardness of HRC 40 or greater. The resulting
surface profile is determined by the size of the grit, which should be appropriately chosen for the application. Grit
blasted surfaces should be properly cleaned prior to coating to insure proper bonding of the coating.
