UPSC / MPSC Exams

 UPSC stands for Union Public Service Commission


and MPSC – Maharashtra Public Service
Commission
 These are constitutional bodies responsible for
recruiting class I and II officers for the Government
of India and states respectively.
 The UPSC also includes NDA entrance, IES, IFS,
ISS, Geological Services, Medical Services etc
along with the Civil Services and the MPSC also
recruits specialized service officers like engg.,
doctors etc for the state
 The Civil Services is by far the most important and
popular of all exams ( Must say it is also one of the
toughest )

The Pattern of the UPSC / MPSC
Civil Services Exam
 The civil services exam is conducted in three stages
– The Prelims – This is a objective type exam having two
papers
• Paper I (General Studies) – 200 Questions / 200 Marks
• Paper II (CSAT) - 200 Questions / 200 Marks
– Negative marking @ 0.33 has been made applicable since 2007
– The MPSC Prelims consists of –
• One paper of General Studies – 200 Questions / 200 Marks
– Negative marking @ 0.25 has been made applicable since 2008
– The advertisement for the UPSC Prelims appears in
December and the Prelims is Scheduled for May in the
subsequent Year.
– The Prelims is of qualifying nature and results are declared
around August, after which the Mains is conducted from
October onwards…

 The Mains – This is a subjective type of exam consisting of –
UPSC MPSC
– English Language 300 Mks 200
– Any Indian Language 300 Mks 200
– Essay 200 Mks NA
– General Studies I 300 Mks 200
– General Studies II 300 Mks 200
– Optional Subject I
• Paper 1 300 Mks 200
• Paper 2 300 Mks 200
– Optional Subject II
• Paper 1 300 Mks 200
• Paper 2 300 Mks 200
 Total 2000 Mks 1600
 Upon qualification you can appear for the interview which is for 300 Marks and
depending on your score of 2300 you get various posts in the IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS
and other cadres. For MPSC the interview is conducted for 200 Marks and of a
total of 1800 you get posts like Dy.Coll., Dy.Sp., Tah., MFAS etc

As You have seen
 In the UPSC approximately 60 % weightage
is given to optional subject
 Similarly in MPSC mains 50% weightage is
given to optional subject.
 Hence it is important to realise that the most

 Assuming we shall write the
exam in 2011
 Advertisement appears in
Dec 2010
 Prelims is approx in May
2011. Results in Aug 2011
 Mains from Oct 11 – Jan 12,
Results in Feb – Mar 12
 Interviews in April 12 and
Final selection by May 2012

has appeared and you are scheduled to
write your next prelims

Age Limit and Number of
Attempts for UPSC
 For open category the age
limit is 21 to 30 and
number of attempts is 4
 For OBC category the age
limit is 21 to 33 and
number of attempts is 7
 For SC / ST category the
age limit is 21 to 35 and
there is no restriction on
the number of attempts

You must remember that every


attempt begins at the Prelims !!
