I will tell you the case from the life of my friend , whose name is Maxim.

 His friend Dima

was pioneer. It was the beginning of spring, middle of March. Huge puddles everywhere
and an old bottle of kerosene. Things seemed to be incompatible. Dima proposed to
pour kerosene into a puddle and burn. "All the same, nothing will happen, it’ll burning
and stop, it’ll be amazing!" - He said, and poured kerosene into a puddle and set on
fire. Flame rose to waist height right on the water surface. The puddle was about the
size 3 * 3 meters. Dima panicked well that my friend kept his head and shouted:”Carry a
shovel!”. And ran into the house for a shovel. Dima brings a bucket of water and also
threw from the top and the whole mass splashed across the yard and began to blaze
stronger. My friend swearing gave him a shovel and began to throw ground on fire.
Thank God, they put it out.

Let’s begin from the definition of kerosene. It is a thin oil distilled from petroleum or
shale oil, used as a fuel for heating and cooking, in lamps, and as a denaturant for
alcohol.

I found this table1:

(e.g., by grounding).
Firstly it was very dangerous to burn kerosene, which was poured into puddle.
Secondly it was bad idea to extinguish fire with water, it just aggravate the situation.
Thirdly NO PANIC.

Kerosene it hazard substance, which should be used with caution.
