The internet, as it stands at the moment, is about as unromantic as it gets. All that technical guff; the wires, the elcctricity; the connections; the fact we push buttons and expect certain responses, Then there's the sadness we fed when it when it's dow n, or slow, or unresponsive, or not doing "hat we want.

Acrually, when it's lard out like that, I suppose the internet isn't that different hom our human notion of love. It's tor that reason I am so fascinated h~ the medium of the web and how w e usc it to connect to others. To longer just sumcthmg onh afforded to the older, the privileged, the" isc Of the educated - the internet has become the local bar, the workplace, the street or the cocktail party. It's where we meet. It'swhere we live,

\\ hen I first began airing my personal dating life (or lack thereof) to an audience of \\ hat 1 bizarrely thought was quite small (bur wasn't), it didn't eem w eird to me. I didn't have a "real life" and then an "online life" - the) were one in the arne.

I have either been blessed or cursed - depending on which W:ly you look at It - to live in a generation where the goalposts arc shifting. \\ hat were considered traditional ways to connect to others arc no longer the only way. Using rhe internet to tell my stor) and to share the dating stones of others bas not \\ atcred dow n tales of 10\ e and lust, of broken hearts or proposals of lives together. It has enhanced it.

The torie have reached more eyeballs, has touched more hearts. The message IS the same; it's just the m dium that's changed. Like the effects of radio and telev ision, the internet has opened new doors to new emotions. It has allowed people to be exposed to the lives of others, feel empathy or pity, like we've never felt before.

But In between all the supposed confusion of the different mediums that \I c usc to connect I· a "en simple truth: the base

of it all remains. \\c \\ ant to be and fed loved. We w ant recogninon that we're ii\ mg and hav e lived. \\c want to feel the surge of excitement \\ hen someone enters our liv es and appreciates what the) 've found. The online worl d has allowed us to do that

Women spoke of abuse within their relation, hips, w hilc men wrote of their concern at alw ays being the "ruce guy" who never gets the girl. It "as overwhelming and heartwarming for me to find and build this community around rnj life.

They (and by that 1 mean those who belicx e the internet is solely a place for underage predators and straying partners looking for their ne: rt bonk) who don't get It, probably won't ever get it .. iegati\ tales of those among us who cheat and lie their \\ay through their lives always seem to be intnnsically linked to the internet. J can understand why, It's easier to blame the internet than the perpetrator who strax s. But for most of us, the internet has enhanced our relationships.

We turn to it to update our Facebook relationship status, we post gooey holiday romance pichi res and we lise the internet to proyc that we're part of the community; The ,cr~ real community that exists online. We connect on blogs, like nunc, so that we know \\ e're not alone in our journey.
