Geography

 11th largest state in India.


 Cover area of 130,058 sq.km.
 It has population of 77,00,000.
 Forests covers over 17% of the state’s
geographical area.
 Dependent heavily on monsoon rains.
 Lies on eastern coast of southern indian
peninsula.
Bordered by
puducherry,kerala,karnataka and
andhra pradesh.
Also bordered by indian ocean in south
and bay of bengal in east.
It is about size of greece.
Its capital is chennai.
There are 31 districts in tamil nadu.
Economy
 3rd largest economy among different states
of india.
 Is most industrialised state in india.
 Most urbanised state in india with 43.86% of
urbanisation.
 State’s GDP is Rs.275,000 crores.
 Per capita income for state is Rs.43,000
ranking 2nd among the south indian states.
 Constitutes 9.12% of total FDI in
country and ranks 3rd in FDI
investment.
 Services contribute to 45% of the
economic activity in the state.
 It is leading producer of cement.
 Is leading contributor in IT and BPO
sectors.
 Is 3rd largest software exporter by
value in india.
 Has railway coach factory ICF(integral
coach factory).
 It ranks first nationwide in diesel based
thermal electricity generation with
national market share over 34%.
 Tamil nadu’s tourism industry is the 2nd
largest in india.
Growth

 State’s GDP increased from 141,100 crore to


275,000 crore.
 Unemployment relatively lowered to 2.8% in
rural and 4.8%in urban area.
 State’s literacy rate raised to 73.47% which is
well above national average.
 In educational sector there are 19
universities,250 engineering colleges and 2550
schools.
 Poverty in state has lowered to 21.1%.
Future growth
 Total eradication of poverty is aimed by
2016.
 Increase in employment potential by
various programmes.
 Rs.0.25 crore investment is prepared for
development of small scale industries.
 Education and development vocational
skills will be oriented more.
 There will be upgradation of technology
to compete with globalization and
economic liberalization.
