In addition to offering education seminars, we also distribute,


through our websites, free, classroom tested, teaching materials focused
on core knowledge (the state standards) and basic skills (reading, writing
and math.) Central to our approach is a great deal of educational
tomfoolery which produces some of the sweetest sounds teachers ever
hear, on task laughter.
In the following pages you’ll find a description of the Power
Student Olympics, a remarkably powerful and flexible series of learning
events, modeled on, but more inclusive than, the international Olympics.
The goal of the Power Student Olympics is for students to set and
break personal records in reading, math, writing, artistic and athletic
events ... while having tremendous fun.

Imagine that every day a slow runner and a fast


runner compete against each other. Before long the slow
runner, who always loses, stops trying; the fast runner, who always wins,
loafs to victory. In many ways, our school system mirrors this contest.
Bright students often do as little work as possible to win the academic
competition; weak students opt out of the race.
If an administrator announced that grades would be given to
students based on family stability, income, and students’ genetic
heritage, there would be an uproar. “Outrageous!”, critics would
exclaim. “We’re grading children, based on nonacademic issues! How
can we punish kids who are poor, come from broken homes and do not
have the intellectual aptitude of their peers? UnAmerican!” But that is
what is happening in our schools. Though there are wonderful
exceptions, if students live in poverty, have an unstable family and are
slow learners, those students will, almost certainly, receive low grades ...
through no fault of their own! And the more low grades these kids get,
the less interested they are in running our race.
Hey! If you’re a really slow runner, come on over here and let us
hang some heavy baggage around your neck. Now, run harder, because
you’re way behind!

Not only does the grade system work to the disadvantage of our
weakest students, but also it often fails to motivate our brightest. As we
try to adapt lessons to the needs of struggling learners, our most
intelligent kids spend too much time staring out the window. Often
bright children use their gifts to discover the least challenging path to
good grades. The race is short, the competition is slow, too many gifted
students lope to the finish line.

But what is the alternative?
We’d like to propose abandoning the grade system.
But we know that won’t happen.
Instead, let’s introduce, as often as possible, a new set of learning
exercises, with a highly motivating goal for all students no matter their
ability.

What if there was an Olympics for everyone ... and what if gold
medals were not given for breaking international marks, but for breaking
personal records? This would be an Olympics for the masses, not the
elite. If the goal was breaking personal records, the slowest runners
could compete with human jackrabbits! In the Power Student Olympics,
students race in a variety of academic, artistic and physical events,
against themselves. Juan has to beat Juan. No one cares if he beats
LaTasha.
The only fair race, perfectly fair race, is the one you run against
yourself. Who are you more equally matched against, than you? In the
Power Student Olympics, we don’t care if you beat Juan and LaTasha.
They don’t care either. Juan’s racing Juan; LaTasha is desperately
trying to outstrip herself. You win a prize this week, only if beat your
best effort from last week.
As you’ll see, the weakest learners in the Power Student Olympics
can earn as many rewards as the strongest. In fact, our experience has
been that it is easier for students at the bottom of the academic scale to
break personal records than it is for kids at the top. If you read 30 words
per minute aloud, it is possible to double your reading speed after a few
weeks of practice; if you read 160 words per minute aloud you can’t
double your reading speed, because your lips won’t move any faster! In
the Power Student Olympics, Special Ed kids can compete, on a level
playing field, with students bound for Harvard. Now that’s American
way.

The international success of the Special Olympics


and Academic Decathlon indicates the widespread appeal of
olympics style competitions. Everyone loves to win prizes, receive
recognition from peers, family and the community, feel like a winner.
One of the unique features of the Power Student Olympics (PSO) is that
it is not designed for unique populations, elite athletes, top students or
students with special needs; the PSO welcomes everyone, no matter
their skills.
The goal of the PSO is for students to set and break personal
records in academic, athletic and artistic events. Here is a description of
core events (materials described below are in Appendix A, B and C.).
1. Power Speed Reading: Using SuperSpeed 100 (Appendix A)
and SuperSpeed 1000 (Appendix B), classroom tested, K-12 learning
games designed by Power Teachers of Southern California,
students strive to break personal records for the number of sight words
read in 60 seconds. Every personal record scores a PSO point.
2. Power Comprehension Reading: Students silently read a
selection chosen by their teacher for five minutes (or longer if the
teacher wishes.) Students are then paired up in teams of two. One team
member is the Player, the other is the Scorekeeper. When the teacher
says “Go!”, every Player stands and speaks as many sentences as
possible in a minute about the reading selection. Players pause briefly
between each sentence, so that the Scorekeeper can make a tally mark.
The total number of tally marks after 60 seconds is the Player’s personal
record. Players are then given a second chance to beat their records;
then teams switch roles. Players become Scorekeepers; Scorekeepers

become Players. To add additional excitement, the teacher may choose
to add any of the following options:
-- Players cannot begin a sentence with “and”
-- Players cannot begin a sentence with “then”
-- Players must use an explanatory, graphic gesture with each
sentence.
-- Players can make notes about the reading material before they
begin.
-- Players can, or cannot, look at the reading selection as they
speak.
3. Power Math: Using SuperSpeed Math (Appendix C) students
break personal records for the number of addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division problems they can solve in a minute. Every
personal record scores a PSO point.
4. Power Writing: The teacher creates a set of writing rules.
These rules might include the following:
-- Every sentence must begin with a capital letter.
-- Every sentence must end with a period, question mark or
exclamation mark.
-- Every word must be spelled correctly.
-- Every letter must be easily readable.
-- No sentence can be shorter than five words or longer than 12
words (these limits can be adjusted for grade levels.)
-- Consecutive sentences cannot begin with the same word.
-- Singular and plural possessives are used with the correct
placement of apostrophes.
And so forth. Depending upon the students’ skill, the rules can be
introduced all at once, or only a few at a time.
Students then are given a writing assignment to complete (in or out
of class). The finished writing assignments are handed to peers to check
and annotate for violations of the writing rules. The teacher reads the
peers’ annotations. Students’ personal record score is determined by the
number of error free sentences they write consecutively, counting from

the first sentence. For example, if Juan makes no mistakes on a 15
sentence essay except for a spelling error in sentence four, then his
personal record is three. He only wrote three, consecutive, error free
sentences, counting from the first sentence.
5. Power Spelling: Students are given a spelling test. Their
personal record is determined by the number of words they spell
correctly. Thus, if Juan spells 15 out of 20 words correctly, his personal
record is 15. He receives one PSO point. If on the next test he spells all
20 words correctly, his new personal record is 20 and he receives
another PSO point. However, now that he has made a perfect score, he
only receives PSO points for perfect scores on each succeeding spelling
tests.
6. Power Drawing: Students make two drawings of any subject.
They strive to make the second drawing more detailed, more colorful,
more energetic, “better” than the first drawing. If the teacher can easily
judge which drawing was second, then the student wins a PSO point.
Students are encouraged to make multiple drawings of the same subject,
each one visibly superior to the last. The teacher gives instructions
about how students can improve their artwork. This process can continue
until both teacher and student agree a “masterpiece” has been completed
which leaves little or no room for improvement. A new subject is then
selected.
7. Power P.E.: Physical education teachers set up fitness,
coordination and athletic events in which students set and break personal
records. At lower grades, these events might be as simple as the number
of times a basketball can be bounced in a minute, or the number of times
a jump rope can be skipped in a minute. At higher grades, events might
include total number of pull-ups, total number of consecutive free
throws made, one mile timed run, etc. Every personal record scores a
PSO point.
8. Power Silence: The teacher brings in a timer and tells the class
that they will begin working quietly. The goal is to see how long

everyone can stay on task without making a noise. As soon as someone
speaks, the teacher stops the timer and writes the result on the board.
This becomes the class record for length of quiet work. When the timer
is used again, and a new class record is set, everyone in class receives a
PSO point.

In general, students train in class and at home from


Monday-Thursday on PSO events chosen by their instructors. In-
class training (game) time, which students will, of course, work hard to
earn, should be determined by teachers based upon class behavior. A
well behaved class might earn five minutes per hour of training (i.e.
playing any of the games listed above.) Disorderly classes receive no
training time all day, and are encouraged to groan miserably. Then they
are told to energetically instruct their neighbors to behave better the next
day.
Friday is Game Day. PSO events are played “for real.” Students
record their achievements on Personal Record Cards (for durability,
these should be printed on card stock.) Players celebrate, shout, holler,
whistle, when they break their own records ... and cheer even louder
when teachers introduce participants who have smashed, crushed,
destroyed their personal records. A rowdy, merry time is had by all ... as
rowdy as neighboring teachers who aren’t involved in the PSO will
permit!

It is entirely possible, and should be seriously


contemplated by a teaching staff, to give no awards for any event in
the PSO, except the accumulation of PSO points. Students are thrilled
by setting and breaking personal records. Greek victors in the original
Olympics received nothing but an olive wreath and an “acclamation”, a
loud, sustained cheer by the audience.
In addition, giving awards can set up substantial bookkeeping and
administration problems. Who should get the awards? How and when
are awards handed out? How accurate are student records? What
awards would provide the most motivation for students? Where does the
money come from for the awards?
Nonetheless, students love winning small mementos that mark
their triumphs. Setting and breaking personal records is truly a
wonderful achievement and might be worth the staff’s efforts to provide
additional recognition.
Here are several, inexpensive awards suggestions.
1. Plastic wrist bands: Bought in bulk, plastic wrist bands (which
students love) cost about 35 cents apiece. The bands can have a
message or logo. We suggest the PSO motto (Stronger! Faster!
Smarter!)

Wrist bands should be awarded in the following denominations:


White: 5 Personal Record Points
Light Blue: 10 Personal Record Points
Red: 15 Personal Record Points
Dark Blue or Pink (student’s choice ... guess which the girls and
boys will pick): 20 Personal Record Points ... this level is quite

important because players get to “become” a boy or a girl based on their
wristband
Camo or Rainbow: 30 Personal Record Points
Metal (silver looking): 50 Personal Record Points
Metal (gold looking): 100 Personal Record Points

2. Alphabet Beads (with bookkeeping): Alphabet beads, and other


varieties of beads are incredibly cheap, 300 for $4.95 (on the Internet, go
to: Oriental Trading Company). Students are awarded one bead per
personal record point. It is suggested for convenience that the beads be
placed in small baggies, 5 per baggie and only handed out when a
student has broken 5 new records. Beads can be worn as bracelets,
necklaces, hung from key chains, backpacks, etc. If the beads are
distributed at the end of the period, then the problem of students playing
with their beads, instead of attending to lessons, will be reduced.
Alphabet beads, used creatively, could have a remarkable
educational, even moral, power. Teachers could use the beads to
construct their own motto, or a message they are going to give to one of
their family members and show the message to their class. Students
become intensely interested when teachers talk about their own lives.
Instructors could share what the message/motto means to them. A
teacher whose mother survived cancer might make a message, “You’re a
winner” Another teacher with a son or daughter graduating from high
school might even make a Latin message, “Ad astra, per astera.” (To the
stars, despite hardships.) Pupils would see that alphabet beads could be
used for more important purposes than merely spelling out their name.
Students should have their message okayed by the teacher before
they string their beads; this is to keep beads from being used as profanity
or as a gang slogan. In addition, requiring students to have their
message approved provides an excellent opportunity for one on one
counseling. “Do you want to talk a little more about the problems your
brother is having? How do you feel about what he is doing with his
life?” Too often we don’t know enough about our pupils’ experience

outside of school; letting them know that we care about their personal
lives, and that they always have someone they can talk to, will help
many students cope with emotional difficulties.
As a final feature of alphabet beads, clear, plastic “jewel beads”
without letters could be called Morphin’ Power Beads. To make
Morphin’ Power Beads valuable, they should be distributed in a ratio of
approximately one to 15 alphabet beads. When pupils receive a
Morphin’ Power Beads, they can go to the office (or wherever), turn it in
and receive back any letter they ask for politely, “Please, thank you...”
etc. Without Morphin’ Power Beads students may have to wait too long
to complete their bead strings.
To see the effect of students creating messages with their beads,
imagine a child whose older brother is in prison. The child makes a
bead message to give to his brother that says, “I will always love you”
and tells the brother that the beads represent personal records the child
has won in school. Beads that are used to construct messages could
become one of the most effective ways students have of responding to
family chaos. Imagine our child thinking, “My brother is in prison, but
I’m going to work hard in school and give him a present I have made
from my personal records. He’s going to love it ... and I’m going to love
giving it to him.”

3. Alphabet beads (without bookkeeping): After students


understand the general idea of the PSO, teachers present their own bead
messages/mottos as described above. Then the instructor says
something like the following, “When I see you working really hard in
the Power Student Olympics, when you’re making real progress in
breaking your records, or even when you’re being very attentive in class,
I’ll give you from 1 to 3 Power Beads. If you complain about the
number of beads I give you, I’ll take them back!” The teacher then
rehearses handing out beads for good behavior and taking them back
when students pretend like they’re complaining. The advantage of
handing out beads that are not rigidly tied to each student’s record, is

that no bookkeeping is necessary. The beads are distributed when and
how the instructor wishes. Very bright students who are loafing might
get fewer beads; weaker students who are striving energetically might
get more beads. On days when the class is unruly, no one wins
anything. On days when the class is hardworking, everyone wins
something. Thus, beads could be awarded not only for the PSO but also
for any behavior the teacher wishes to reinforce. If you have a large
number of students or don’t have time for complex record keeping, this
system of rewards for the PSO is ideal.

4. YouTube Video: Our students love YouTube. Let’s use it to


education’s advantage. As a collective reward for success (say, the entire
class amasses 100 PSO points) students could begin creating a video of
their PSO experiences and post it on YouTube (and TeacherTube). Of
course, taping could only take place if the class was well behaved. On
an excellent day, five minutes might be shot; other days only a few
seconds might be recorded. If several classes at a school submit a video,
a wonderfully exciting competition could result.
Students in each video would be encouraged to contact family,
friends, use MySpace, FaceBook, text messaging. to generate as many
hits on the video as possible. The tape with the most hits by the end of
the school year wins. The prize for winning, or coming in second, third,
fourth, etc., will be determined by school staff.

There are several obvious advantages to the PSO.


First, unlike the grade system, students compete on a level playing
field. Everyone can set and break personal records. Weaker students,
who are the ones most likely to be “left behind”, can often compete
more successfully than gifted students. Second, students love contests,
but have a special passion for surpassing their own previous best effort.
The PSO provides pupils with a continuous record of their own
wonderful achievements. Third, because the PSO is focused only on
individual achievement, no student can lord it over another; no student
needs to feel cowed by the ability of classmates. Fourth, the PSO is
extremely flexible. Teachers can use as many or few events as they
wish. Rewards can be used, ignored, or saved for later in the
competition. One teacher, a grade level or an entire school can create a
PSO.

SuperSpeed 100 is a lively, entertaining game


designed to teach beginning readers of any age 100 of the most
common sight words. Versions of this game have been successfully
classroom tested by thousands of students since 1999.
Sight words, like “the, to, and, of”, are the most common words in
English. Only 100 sight words make up over 50% of all the words
students read! If these words cannot be read quickly, at a rate of at least
90 words per minute by the end of 3rd grade, students’ odds of success
in the rest of their education are significantly diminished. The more
rapidly students can read sight words, the greater their reading fluency
and pleasure.
SuperSpeed 100 is appropriate for readers from kindergarten
through 3rd grade, and can be used in remedial work at higher levels. In
addition, the game adapts superbly to the needs of English learners,
including adults who are taking a beginning reading course.
Though it is not meant to replace, but only supplement, traditional
phonics based reading systems, students can successfully play
SuperSpeed 100 even if they have no knowledge of letter sounds ... or
the alphabet!
As you will see, the pedagogical structure of the game teaches
reading by recognition of word shapes.
If your students play SuperSpeed 100 for only a few minutes,
several times a week, you’ll see substantial improvements in overall
reading speed; gains of 20% -40% within a month are not uncommon.
SuperSpeed 100 is so entertaining that teachers have used it as a
reward for good behavior! Students work hard in class, to gain the
privilege of playing SuperSpeed!! The game is especially powerful if
used the context of the Power Student Olympics (see details above.)

The words in SuperSpeed 100 are arranged in order of frequency.
“The” is the most common word in English, and thus it is the first word
learned. “To” is the next most common word in English and is the
second word learned, and so forth. The 100 words in SuperSpeed 100
are a combination of the well known Dolch and Frye lists, but, for
copyright purposes, are not arranged in an order identical to either.
SuperSpeed 100 contains 100 levels. One new word is added in
each level from 1-100; previously learned words are frequently repeated.
Every 10 levels, there is a Challenge. The Challenge contains all the
words from previous levels. If you want your students to completely
master all the words in the game, they should not advance beyond any
Challenge they can’t perfectly complete.
Level 100 contains all 100 of the words used in the game; for
mastery, Level 100 must be completed in 60 seconds or less.
When students have mastered Level 100, they can go on to
SuperSpeed 1000 (Appendix B).

Playing SuperSpeed 100 is simple.


First, decide what word you want your students to begin with.
Below are the 100 words in SuperSpeed 100. (It is recommended that
kindergartners begin at word 1, “the”.) If you want your students to
begin with “up”, word 24 below, then they will start at Level 24. If you
want your students to begin with “so”, word 50 below, then they will
start with Level 50 and so forth.

Arrange your class in groups of twos. If you have an odd number
of students, you will pair with the extra student. Without telling your
pupils, be sure that a weaker reader is always paired with a stronger
reader.
Begin by saying something like the following, “We’re going to
play SuperSpeed, a game you’ll love! When I say ‘go!’, one person on
your team reads the first word, then the other person on the team reads
the next word, and so on. Keep taking turns. If your partner doesn’t
know a word, or mispronounces it, ‘helpsies’ is allowed. Say the word
for him or her. Keep taking turns, reading as fast as you can. I’ll say
‘stop!’ after a minute. Mark your team’s record on the page and then I’ll

give you another try for a minute. Start over with the first word you
read, but whoever started goes second and whoever went second, now
goes first. You’ll be trying to beat your previous record. Tell your
teammate right now how badly the two of you want to keep breaking
your records!”
Conclude by telling your class what level they will all begin with.
Only two additional rules need to be added.
1. Every time the game is replayed, the team starts at the
beginning of whatever level (or Challenge) they ended in.
For example, the first time Jane and Juana play, Jane, starting for
her team, begins at Level 1, and the team, taking turns, reads to the 5th
word in Level 3. Juana then starts for her team and the team, taking
turns, reads to the 10th word in Level 3. The next time Jane and Juana
play, they begin at the first word in Level 3. This assures you that teams
receive plenty of repetitions on the most common sight words.
Whenever students achieve a new starting level, and they will
frequently, you should encourage them to give themselves a merry
cheer.
2. When players break personal records, they should place a
checkmark inside a new personal record star on page 55. You may be
surprised at how much your students enjoy creating, and sharing!, a
visual record of their own achievements. If SuperSpeed 100 is used in
the context of the Power Student Olympics, other awards are described
on page 12.

Now, here is a very important point. Students love to play


SuperSpeed 100 because they love to set and break personal records.
Teams are never competing against each other, but against their own
previous best effort. Thus, the learning goal is set at exactly the right
level, no matter the team’s ability. The only standard they must exceed
is the one they set for themselves the last time they played the game.
Until you try SuperSpeed 100 in class, you won’t believe the enthusiasm
your students will have while playing. Students love the feeling of being

record breakers, and the unique structure of SuperSpeed 100 gives them
this feeling over and over.
Now, let’s look at the unique pedagogical structure of SuperSpeed
100. The first three levels are on the following page.

And that’s all there is to it!


Playing SuperSpeed 100 is an ideal reward for good behavior in
class. Wouldn’t you rather see your students eagerly mastering sight
words than giving them candy? The game literally takes a few minutes
... and the most common comment we hear from teachers is “My class
loves it!”
Students, effortlessly, receive hundreds of repetitions reading the
most common sight words while setting and breaking team records. The
goal is not to break another team’s record, but to surpass your own
team’s previous best mark. Even better than increasing reading speed,
players of SuperSpeed 100 are rewarded with one of the most deeply
powerful lessons in education: I can set and break personal records. I
can always do better than my own previous best.
If you want to make the game easier for your students, limit the
timed sessions to 30 seconds; if you want to move the game along more
quickly for higher grade students (3rd-6th) , change the timed sessions to
90 seconds or 2 minutes.

You can easily adapt SuperSpeed 100 to the special


needs of individual students. Simply have your students read the list of
100 words on page 7. Note the first word a student misses, and then
start him/her at that level in SuperSpeed 100. For example, if Joe misses
“could”, word 46, then he would start at Level 46. You can then fill the
role of his partner, as described above and take turns reading words. Or,

SuperSpeed 1000 is a game designed to teach readers


1000 of the most common sight words. Versions of this game have
been successfully classroom tested by hundreds of students since 1999.
SuperSpeed 1000 is especially effective when used in the Power Student
Olympics, described in the first section of this book.
Sight words, like “the, to, and, of”, are the most common words in
English. Only 100 sight words make up over 50% of all the words
students read! If these words cannot be read quickly, at a rate of at least
90 words per minute, by the end of 3rd grade, students’ odds of success
in the rest of their education are significantly diminished. The more
rapidly students can read sight words, the greater their reading fluency
and pleasure.
SuperSpeed 1000 is appropriate for readers from 3rd grade through
12th. In addition, the game adapts superbly to the needs of English
learners, including adults who are taking a beginning reading course.
If you let your students play SuperSpeed 1000 for only a few
minutes, several times a week, you’ll see substantial improvements in

overall reading speed; gains of 20% -40% within a month are not
uncommon.

word read, and so forth. The 1000 words in SuperSpeed 1000 are a
compilation of the well known Dolch and Frye lists, but are not arranged
in an order identical to either.

Playing SuperSpeed 1000 is quite simple. Arrange


your class in groups of twos. If you have an odd number of students,
you will pair with the extra student. Without telling your pupils be sure
that a weaker reader is always paired with a stronger reader.
After you hand out the SuperSpeed 1000 word list (see page 8) say
something like the following, to your students, “We’re going to play
SuperSpeed, a game you’ll love! When I say ‘go!’, one person on your
team reads the first word, then the other person on the team reads the
next word, and so on. Keep taking turns. If your partner doesn’t know a
word, or mispronounces it, ‘helpsies’ is allowed. Say the word for him
or her. Keep taking turns, reading as fast as you can. I’ll say ‘stop!’
after a minute. Mark your team’s record on the page; then I’ll give you
another try for a minute. Start over with the first word you read, but this
time your partner goes first and you go second. Your partner reads the
first word, you read the second word, and so forth. If you beat your
team record after a minute, give yourselves a merry cheer. Now, explain
some of the rules of SuperSpeed 1000 to each other.”
After you students have explained the game to each other, add the
following.

“On the SuperSpeed 1000 list you’ll occasionally see underlined
italics words called zingers. Every zinger is a nonsense word like
splootz! or zoink! When you finish playing, count up the number of
zingers your team read when you set your best team record. Every
zinger gives you a five word bonus. So, if your team read two zingers,
then the next time you play, you can start 10 words from your previous
starting place. For example, if you began at the first word 'the’ and read
through two zingers, then you earn a two bonuses and next time you can
start 10 words further on, with word ‘was.’ Tell each other how much
you love those nonsense. bonus zingers!”
Only one additional rule needs to be added.
When players break personal records, they should place a
checkmark inside a new personal record star on page 18. You may be
surprised at how much your students enjoy creating, and sharing!, a
visual record of their own achievements.
Students love setting and breaking records and also, for some
reason, they love nonsense words. Virtually every time a team plays,
they will break a previous record, and will often spontaneously cheer.
Zingers give them an excuse to be silly and, because they are scattered
through SuperSpeed 1000, teams have additional incentives, besides
trying to break a record, for reading quickly. “Look, there’s a zinger
down there ... we’ve got to get to it.” Zingers also automatically move

players forward through the game, so that they are always reading a few
words more than the previous time they played. The repetitive structure
of SuperSpeed 1000 assures you that students receive plenty of practice
on the most common sight words. Whenever students achieve a new
starting level, and they will frequently, you should encourage them to
give themselves a merry cheer (and put a checkmark inside a new
personal record star on page 18).
Playing SuperSpeed 1000 is an ideal reward for good behavior in
class. Wouldn’t you rather see your students eagerly mastering sight
words than giving them candy? The game literally takes a few minutes
... and the most common comment we hear from teachers is “My class
loves it!”
Students, effortlessly, receive hundreds of repetitions reading the
most common sight words while setting and breaking team records. The
goal is not to break another team’s record, but to surpass your own
team’s previous best mark. Even better than increasing reading speed,
players of SuperSpeed 1000 are rewarded with one of the most deeply
powerful lessons in education: I can set and break personal records. I
can always do better than my own previous best.

You can easily adapt SuperSpeed 1000 to the special


needs of individual students. You can fill the role of the student’s
partner, as described above and take turns reading words. Or, for
variety, simply have your students read the words on their own, as fast
as possible. Encourage them to keep breaking personal records.

Directions: Make a team of two readers. Beginning at line 1 below, you


read the first word and your partner reads the second word. Keep taking turns,
reading as quickly as possible for a minute. When your team is finished, mark the
last word you or your partner read. This is your team record. Play again for a
minute, trying to break this record, but this time, your partner goes first. Your

SuperSpeed Math is a lively, entertaining game


designed to teach beginning learners of any age math facts in
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using the numbers
from 0-10. Versions of this game have been successfully classroom
tested by thousands of students since 1999. SuperSpeed Math is
especially useful if used in the context of the Power Student Olympics
described in the first section of this book.
Because it begins with the simplest arithmetic operations and
continues through the most difficult, SuperSpeed Math is appropriate for
learners from kindergarten through 12th grade. The game also adapts
superbly to the needs of English learners, including adults who are
taking a beginning math course.
If your students play SuperSpeed Math for only a few minutes,
several times a week, you’ll see substantial improvements in overall
mathematics accuracy; gains of 20% within a month are not uncommon.
SuperSpeed Math is so entertaining that teachers have used it as a
reward for good behavior! Students work hard in class, to gain the
privilege of playing SuperSpeed!!

As a representative of our approach, we’ll focus the


following on SuperSpeed Addition. The other math games,
subtraction, multiplication and division, follow the same format. (You’ll
learn more about Gnarlies, the most common math errors, in a few
moments.)
Except for “carrying”, all addition operations involve nothing
more complex than adding the numbers from 0-10. And yet in every
class, students make countless addition errors. Why? The reason is
obvious: students have too little addition practice. Your class will not be
able to flawlessly total columns of numbers until they can master adding
two numbers. The more rapidly students can add (and perform the other
three math operations, subtraction, multiplication and division), the
greater their mathematics fluency and confidence
SuperSpeed Addition (like the rest of SuperSpeed Math) is played
with a grid of problems. There are only two levels, termed, appropriately
enough, Level 1 and Level 2. Level 1 is simpler; Level 2 is more
complex.
Each level is composed of a test and a set of answers.
Students work in pairs. One student orally takes the test; the other
student checks the answers (more details in a moment.)

Every possible combination of addition problems 0-10 is included
in numerical order. The problems move from simpler, adding 0, 1, 2, 3
to more complex, adding 6, 7, 8, 9. Note the shaded boxes of the 15
problems, the Gnarly 15, near the end.

The Gnarlies have been identified by college math instructors as


the most common addition errors. The closer pairs of numbers approach
10 (6 + 7, 8 + 9, etc.), the more likely students are to make an addition
error. With one exception. Students seem to make fewer errors when
they are adding doubles, 6 + 6, 7 + 7, 8 + 8 and 9 + 9.
Spend some time helping yours students master the Gnarlies …
there are only 15 in addition (and somewhat more in the other math
operations.) When they learn there are only 15 problems that cause the
majority of addition errors in college, they’ll be motivated to focus
especially hard on these challenging pairs. (Think about that. There are
only 15 addition problems that cause the majority of difficulty in higher
grades … let’s rid the world of the Gnarlies!)

Level 2 presents the same 121 addition problems as Level 1 but in


random order and the Gnarlies are much closer to the beginning. When
students master Level 2, they have mastered all the basic addition facts

and will have had plenty of practice adding the most troublesome pairs
of numbers.
One final, and important note. When you hand out these grids to
your students, print each Level on one page, back to back. Level 1 Test
is on one side of the page; Level 1 Answers is on the other side of the
same sheet. Same for Level 2 Test and Answers.

Playing SuperSpeed Math is simple. We’ll continue


to use SuperSpeed Addition as our example.
The game is played in 60 second time periods, with students
working in pairs. As quickly as possible, one student orally solves the
questions on the Test; the other student checks the Answers.
Arrange your class in groups of twos. If you have an odd number
of students, you will pair with the extra student. Without telling your
pupils, be sure that a weaker learner is always paired with a stronger
learner.
Each student gets two 60 second attempts. Thus, if Juana and
Paul are playing, Juana, looking at the test sheet, orally solves as many
addition problems as possible in 60 seconds while Paul, looking at the
answer sheet, orally corrects her mistakes. Then, Juana gets a second try
and attempts to break her previous record. When Juana is finished, Paul
gets two 60 second attempts; Juana orally corrects his mistakes.
The goal is for each player to solve as many math problems as
possible in 60 seconds, setting and breaking personal records. Juana is
not trying to beat Paul’s record or vice versa. Juana’s only focus is on
improving her fastest time. Students are racing against themselves …
which is the fairest race of all.
Emphasize to your class that “helpsies” is not only allowed but
encouraged. If Juana doesn’t know an answer, Paul, making a dot on the
troublesome problem on the answer sheet, immediately helps her.
Players, because they are slowed down when they are corrected, soon
understand that studying the problems on the answer sheet with the most
dots is the best way to improve their personal records.

1. Before players begin they should mark a goal on the math grid;
this indicates the problem they hope to complete by the end of 60
seconds. Goal setting is not only a crucial feature in SuperSpeed …
it certainly makes the game even more exciting, but also,
obviously, an important component in education and life.
2. When players break personal records, they should place their
score inside a personal record star on page111. Thus, for
example, if Juana finishes problem C in row 8, she would write
C8 in her personal record star. You will be surprised at how
much your students enjoy creating, and sharing!, a visual record
of their own achievements.
3. If students can accurately solve every problem they attempt in
60 seconds, then the next time they play they can start one row
further down. For example, if Juana begins at row 1 and in 60
seconds solves every problem up to row 8, then the next time
she plays she can begin at row 2. This allows students to move
forward who are making no math errors.

Now, here is a very important point. Students love to play


SuperSpeed Math because they love to strive for goals and to set and
break personal records. Players are never competing against each other,
but against their own previous best effort. Thus, the learning objective
is set at exactly the right level, no matter a player’s ability. The only
standard Juana must exceed is the one she set for herself the last time
she played. Until you try SuperSpeed Math in class, you won’t believe
the enthusiasm your students will have while playing. Students love the
feeling of being record breakers, and the unique structure of SuperSpeed
Math gives them this feeling over and over

Let’s say that Juana is a math whiz and Paul isn’t.


That’s all right. When you think she’s ready, simply move Juana
on to Level 2. This will present a new, significantly harder challenge. If
she can solve all the addition problems set up in random order in 60
seconds, then when she gets to the end, she starts over at the beginning.
In many cases you will find that students like Paul, a weaker
learner, will set more personal records than students like Juana. It is
easier to set and break personal records when you are a slow than when
you are fast!
Isn’t that wonderful? When playing SuperSpeed Math, your
weakest learners can be the biggest winners!!!!
If you are a lower grade teacher or want to simplify the game, limit
students to the first few rows of any of the SuperSpeed Level 1 Math
grids (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division … and the
Gnarlies.) In general, rows 1-3 contain nothing but math problems
involving 0, 1, 2, 3.
If you are a higher grade teacher or want to increase the difficulty
of the game, either begin with Level 2 (the random collection of math
problems) or limit your students to competing on the last four or five
rows of Level 1 (these rows contain the larger numbers and all the
Gnarlies.)
If you decide to limit your students to a smaller set of numbers for
either of the above reasons, then their task is simply to see how many
times they can complete the assigned set in 60 seconds.
If you want to significantly increase the difficulty of the game, or
any subset of the game, then tell students to subtract one from their score
for each problem missed. Thus, if Juana completes 121 problems in 60

seconds, but misses 10 according to Paul’s dots, then her personal
record is 111 (120 – 10 = 111).
Playing SuperSpeed Math is an ideal reward for good behavior in
class. Wouldn’t you rather see your students eagerly mastering addition
than giving them candy? The game literally takes a few minutes ... and
the most common comment we hear from teachers is “My class loves
it!”

It is easy to adapt SuperSpeed Math for students with


special needs. When working one on one, you, a peer tutor, or any
stronger learner takes the role of the weaker student’s partner. For
added excitement the stronger learner can make addition mistakes on
purpose and complain about his/her math problems. If 60 seconds is too
long a time period, shorten the game to a minute or even 30 seconds.
When the weaker learner breaks his or her record, loudly celebrate; the
stronger learner should demand an equally rowdy celebration when he or
she breaks a record. Kids love to make a racket.

As noted earlier, the Gnarlies are the most common


math errors. College teachers report that the numbers 6, 7, 8 and
9 cause students the most difficulty, no matter whether they are adding,
subtracting, multiplying or dividing. Thus, each SuperSpeed grid
contains its own set of Gnarlies. In Level 1, the Gnarlies occur near the
bottom of the grid; in Level 2, where the math problems are randomly
distributed, the Gnarlies have all magically gravitated toward the
beginning of the grid where students will receive the most practice…
gosh, those dang Gnarlies.
After the grids for addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division, SuperSpeed Math concludes with two surprises.
Yes, you’ve guessed it. We finish with two grids, Level 1 and
Level 2, of nothing but addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Gnarlies… and even worse, Level 2 has these horrible problems
randomly mixed! Oh, those dang, dang Gnarlies.

hilarious ways to celebrate students breaking personal records.
One last, but important thought.
We in Power Teaching believe that teachers and students should
not only set personal but also class goals. We suggest that you set your
class goal, for each time they play SuperSpeed at, initially, 50% of your
students breaking a personal record. The class as a whole should have a
reward, a small one, whenever this goal is achieved. For example,
everyone, even the non-record breakers, should receive 1 point extra
credit, or one minute more of free time at the end of the day. When the
50% goal is routinely achieved, then raise the bar to 60% and eventually
75% or higher. We want to teach our students that the success of one,
effects many others … and the success of many, can influence one.
Thus, playing SuperSpeed Math creates a powerful learning community
in which all players benefit from group record breaking.
