SOLAR POWER FOR REMOTE PENSTOCKS AND AUTOMATED WEIRS 

Dabbrook Services Ltd.  can supply battery based power supply systems, charged by 
Solar PV Modules for weirs and penstocks on rivers and pipelines in remote areas. 
 
• Automated Weirs 

The  water  level  upstream  of  the  structure  is  monitored  by  the  use  of  ultrasonic  or 
pressure  transducers  and  the  gate  raised  and  lowered  by  a  DC  powered  actuator  in 
order to maintain a near constant upstream water level. The power supply is provided 
by sealed maintenance free lead acid batteries which are charged by Solar PV modules. 
The  PV  array  and  battery capacity  are  designed  using  specialist software  which takes 
into account operational duty and weather details for the actual location. 
Full  system  monitoring  can  be  incorporated  using  low  power  radio  of  GSM  based 
telemetry systems.

• Motorised Penstocks 
Simple Penstocks or valves can be   
motorised in remote locations 
without the need to install power 
cables from the grid by using batteries 
which are charged from Solar PV 
modules. 

Operation may be by the use of local 
controls or remotely via low power 
radio of GSM based telemetry 
equipment. The status of the actuator 
and position of the penstock can also 
be monitored via telemetry.

orientated South. The batteries, charge controller 
and telemetry equipment is housed in the base. 
 
The  picture  to  the  left  shows  the  DC  actuator 
within a vandal resistant cabinet.
