Between 15 and 22 May, Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s Global Media Impact has

established him as the best-known person in the world with a presence on the front
page of more than 150,000 daily international newspapers.

Bruno Lalande, Head of Media Evaluation Studies at Kantar Media France, explains: “In
France, between 15 and 22 May, the DSK affair recorded 13,761 UBM (Media Impact
Index), an all-time high in the history of the UBM indicator (since 2000). It means that during
this period, every person in France aged 15 and over was exposed to the news on 137
occasions. This is an unprecedented level of media coverage. This major event also
recorded 33,131 mentions in the Media: the DSK affair is receiving media coverage as
intense as that for the earthquake and nuclear accident in Japan”.

In comparison, Nicolas Sarkozy and Barack Obama both reached 7,000 UBM in the week
following their election.
In 2009, the highest UBM were for the death of Michael Jackson, with a UBM of 2,302 on 26
June, and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, with a UBM of 1,672 on 9
November.
In 2010, the highest UBM were for the results of the second round of the French regional
elections, with a UBM of 2,239 on 22 March, and for the Fillon III cabinet reshuffle, with a
UBM of 1,899 on 14 November.
In 2011, the highest UBM were for the natural disasters in Japan, with a UBM of 2,928
on 16 March, and the announcement of the death of Osama bin Laden, with a UBM of
3,011 on 2 May.

UBM methodology:
The UBM index was created in 2000 and is the benchmark indicator for measuring media
impact. It is produced by Kantar Media France News Monitoring Division with Médiamétrie.
This is a composite indicator that analyses both the editorial coverage (in pages or minutes)
dedicated to a particular topic and the audience of the medium providing the coverage in the
15 and over target. 1 UBM equates to 1% of the population potentially being exposed to one
page or one minute of information on a particular topic in the media.
As an index of media impact, UBM figures are calculated daily for a panel of 110 Media (43
from the written press, 54 radio and TV news slots and 13 online press media), all of which
lead the field in terms of size of audience.
