Question a) 20 marks

 Will ask you ‘How far the sources suggest’ whether a statement is true
 In the first section present the evidence that supports the statement being true. Explain your
points fully. Where possible, use the sources in combination to link your points: e.g. ‘This
view, expressed in Source 2, is supported by Source 1 where it says...’ Make sure you spend
time discussing the provenance of each source (Nature, origin, purpose etc. = is it reliable?)
 In the second section present the evidence that does not support the statement being true.
Write this in exactly the same way.
 Finish with a conclusion that says how far the sources agree with/ support the statement.
Do not say things like ‘I agree that’ because you are not being asked for your own opinion-
you are being asked what the evidence put in front of you says. Do, however, say how far:
not just ‘an extent’, but ‘to a large extent’, ‘to a small extent’ etc. – Do explain how you
reached this judgement.

Question b) 40 marks

 Will ask you if you agree with a statement. You are expected to decide based on the sources
and your own knowledge.
 In the first section present the evidence that agrees with the statement. Explain your points
fully. Include your own knowledge to develop the claims raised by the sources. E.g. Source 2
might say ‘Heath failed on the economy’ – Use your own knowledge to add detail to the
claims. Where possible, use the sources in combination to link your points: e.g. ‘This view,
expressed in Source 2, is supported by Source 1 where it says...’ Make sure you spend time
discussing the provenance of each source (Nature, origin, purpose etc. = is it reliable?)
 In the second section present the evidence that does not agree with the statement. Write
this in exactly the same way.
 Finish with a conclusion that says to what extent you agree. Show that you have used the
evidence of the sources to influence your final opinion. Do not just say to ‘an extent’- this is
not explicitly defining how much you agree.
