“2011 Broadcaster of the Year”

Victoria, BC – On Saturday, May 28, 2011, CHEK was named the “2011 Broadcaster of the
Year” by the Broadcast Educators Association of Canada. The honour was handed out during
the association’s annual Professional Development conference held this year at the Ocean
Pointe Resort.

The BEAC commended the employees of CHEK for saving the station, for building on its
extensive legacy and for providing continued support to interns and graduates from broadcast
colleges in Canada. Past recipients of this award include: Rogers, Newcap, CTV and Global.

“This is a great honour coming from Broadcast Instructors from colleges across Canada,”
says John Pollard, President of CHEK Media Group. At CHEK we pride ourselves on not only
breaking new ground but we believe in cultivating new talent and helping to produce the
broadcasters of tomorrow.
The “Broadcaster of the Year” award is presented to the broadcaster/media professional who
has demonstrated a high degree of assistance to one or more Broadcast Programs across
the country. This could be by serving on Advisory Committees, accepting students for Field
Placement/Internship, donating equipment or mentoring students.

About CHEK:
CHEK has served Vancouver Island since 1956 and was the first private television station in
BC. In September of 2009, with overwhelming support from communities across Vancouver
Island, CHEK employees and local investors purchased the station to ensure the Island’s most
watched news remained on the air. In recognition of the remarkable effort and investment put
forth by all involved, in January 2010, the employees of CHEK NEWS were honoured with a
national award for Journalistic Integrity by the Canadian Journalism Foundation. The CHEK
News team works diligently to cover stories right across Vancouver Island, and the station is a
proud community partner with many fundraising causes in communities from Victoria to
Port Hardy.
