works

Why search engine
 Hundreds of millions of web-page available in
the internet, in that most of them sleeping in
the server.

 Because we don’t know the specific URL


address of the webpage.
Introduction
 Search engines are special site which used for
search the webpage on the internet based on
the words (Search Terms)

 Search engine look through their database of


information in order to find our search terms.
History
 Archie - First tool used for searching on the
Internet (1990)

 Gopher – For Storing the indexes of files on the


internet (1991)

 W3Catalog- First Web Search engine (1993)


Different Types Of Search Engines
Based on three tasks
 The search engine operates based on the three
tasks. They are

 Web Crawling

 Searching

 Indexing
Tools for Search engine
 Spiders – To Build the list of keywords found
on the websites. (Web crawling)

 Robots – Contents of the webpage are


analyzed to index (meta-tags)
How Google works
 Google has dedicated DNS server to translate
server name into URL address.

Google spider will look the HTML page and


extract two things.
1.Whether the search terms within the page or not
2. If yes means, How many times and where.
Meta tags
 It specifies the keywords and concepts of the
webpage.

 In order to avoid error, spiders will correlate


the meta tags with page content, reject the tags
that don’t match the terms
How storing
 After finding the information on the webpage,
the search engine will store the information.

 Two components to access the data


Information stored with the data (URL and
word)
Information indexed by the method (Ranking)
Page ranking
 No of times that search items appears on a
page.

 Weight will increase based on, number of


entries in links, in the meta tags and in the title
of the documents.
Summary
CONCLUSION:
 Search engine plays important role in
accessing the content over the internet, it
fetches the pages requested by the user.

 It made the internet and accessing the


information just a click away.
