Shray: Why? What happen?

Nalin: Our profits has decreased consecutively for the 3rd quarter.

Shray: And market capitalisation.

Nalin: Seems to be slipping out of our hands, from 67% in the last quarter it has fallen to 54% this
quarter.

Soundarya: Can I come in?

Shray: Hi, Soundarya, how are you? It’s been so long since we have met

Soundarya: I am fine Shray; actually I was busy doing my mba .How are you?

Soundarya: Relax Shray, from what I can see; you are facing with 5 major problems in business.
Bargaining from customer, supplier and threat from competitors, substitutes and new entrants. In
Management, these are called 5 forces .These were first described by Michael Porter.

Soundarya: No not Harry Potter its Michael Porter. He is a Guru in competitive strategy.

These forces are just a part of numerous Porter’s strategic models. See, when you started the
business you were the big fish .And the sector in which you are is highly profitable, that’s why it’s
attracting new entrants. They are compromising on quality on cost .I think you need to upgrade your
technology to be ahead of your competitors, reduce the cost, try to reassess your business model to
be able to serve your customer as well as increase bottom-line.
