Crime and Policing

Part of the ‘What Lies Beneath

the Surface’ inquiry topic
Jake Chadwick
What I am going to talk about
• Where was the first police force made and
when?
• Are there special police for investigations
– What is their name?
– What tools do the special police use?
• How do the police know where fingerprints
are?
The first police
• Created by the government of King Louis
XIV(14)
• In 1667 March 15
• Located in Paris, France – the largest city
in Europe
• The first police station was commanded
by the Lieutenant General of Police
Are there special police for
investigations?
• Scientists are used to investigate crimes:
– They’re called forensic investigators
– They question the suspects and collect
evidence
– Now the police predict the answer
• Also the scientists test DNA left at the crime
scene
• The scientists put any fingerprints on the
computer to compare against criminals
• They examine objects left at the scene
What tools do the special police
use?
• Tools are used to look at evidence:
– The electron microscope is used by scientists
and it magnifies 10 million times better than
eyes
– Ordinary microscopes are good with tiny objects
but don’t reveal what objects are made of
– Five types of microscope are used to look at
glass, finger and foot prints, hair and fibres
• Ordinary microscopes
• Electron microscopes
• Polarised light microscopes
• Stereoscopic microscopes
• Comparison microscopes (look at two objects)
How do police know where
fingerprints are?
• The police look at any items that looks like
its been touched or looks out of place
• The police brush with a special powder
around the point of entry
