What are Intranet?
 An intranet is a private computer network that
uses Internet Protocol technologies to securely
share any part of an organization's information
or network operating system within that
organization.
 Intranet is the generic term for a collection of
private computer networks within an
organization. 
Definition of Intranet
Technical definition-
 An intranet is a network based on internet
TCP/IP open standard.An intranet belongs to
the organisation and is designed to be
accessible only by the organization
members,employees or others with
authorization.
Uses of Intranet
 Intranets are being used as corporate culture-
change platforms.
 Intranets are being used to deliver tools and
applications, e.g., collaboration.
 Intranet user-experience, editorial, and
technology teams work together
to produce in house site
Characteristics of Intranet
 An intranet is a private analog of the Internet, or a
private extension of the Internet confined to an
organization.
 The first intranet websites and home pages began to
appear in organizations in 1990-1991. Although not
officially noted, the term intranet first became common-
place among early adopters, such as universities and
technology corporations, in 1992.
 Intranets may provide a gateway to the Internet by
means of a network gateway with a firewall, shielding the
intranet from unauthorized external access.
Benefits of Intranet
 Intranets can help users to locate and view information faster
and use applications relevant to their roles and
responsibilities.
 Intranets allow organizations to distribute information to
employees as on as needed basis.
 Enhance Collaboration.
 Promote common corporate culture.
 Support a distributed computing
architecture.
