Motivation Theory
Essential Elements of
Taylorism
1. Study the work process to
determine the most
efficient production
methods.
2. Observe and time the best
workers in these methods.
3. Train the remaining
workers to the same
standard.
4. Implement differential pay
rates and close
supervision to increase
productivity.
Taylor’s theory
 Motivation is an
external factor achieved
through money.
 Employees should be
closely supervised and
paid piece-rate.
 Time and motion
studies determine
efficient means of
production and workers
are trained and told how
to operate.
Taylor’s theories were based on a
simple interpretation of human
behaviour, that people are
motivated solely by money – his
term was “rational man”
Disadvantages of Taylorism
 Views where unpopular with shop-floor
employees.
 Taylor’s approach raised efficiency and
productivity.
 His ideas resulted in strikes and other
forms of industrial action by dissatisfied
workers.
