INTRODUCTION OF THE CASE
 This case discusses labour exploitation in the
chocolate industry.
 It specifically addresses the cocoa beans grown on
farms in western Africa, especially the Ivory coast
and Ghana.
 The cocoa farmers of these nations, however, often
rely on slaves to harvest their beans, and in some
cases, enslavement of young males.
 This case represents various ethical issues raised,
whether the slavery is viewed as absolutely wrong
or relatively wrong.
SYSTEMIC ETHICAL ISSUES
Systemic issues in business ethics are:
 Ethical questions raised about the political systems,
 Legal, and other social systems or institutions within
which businesses operate.
 Right from the United Nations Children fund, the
International Labour Organization, the US state
department to the National Government of all the
countries including that of Ivory Coast and Ghana,
they all knew that the boy slavery was rampant in
the cocoa fields in Ivory coast and Ghana but none of
them took any step to stop this menace
CORPORATE ETHICAL ISSUES
 It relates to the middlemen who obtain cocoa from
the farmers who used child slavery and making it
available for sale.
 The various manufacturers who buy from these
distributors, in spite of being aware of the child
labor used in the production of cocoa.
 They agreed to establish a system of
“certification” that verify and certify the beans
used by members of the Chocolate Manufacturer
Association were not harvested by slave labour.
 This difficult problem of certification remained
unsolved and they kept on using the cocoa beans
produced by the farmers of the Ivory Coast.
INDIVIDUAL ETHICAL ISSUES
It included:
 Bribing the officials.
 Mixing of cocoa beans with paid and unpaid
workers ,as a malpractice.
 Individuals consuming products produced from the
slaves .
WHO SHARES IN THE MORAL
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SLAVERY
OCCURRING IN THE CHOCOLATE
INDUSTRY ?
 African farmers
 African governments
 American chocolate companies
 Distributors
 Consumers
