Who was right, Green or Martin, about Martins more controversial actions in facilitating the project?

How might have things turned out if martin had not been a member of the project team? After analyzing the case and giving deep insights to Martins activities and Ugandas cultural environment for business, it can be drawn that Martin was right in his perspective. He took controversial steps to successfully facilitate the project work and get it ready for the construction, which was the preliminary phase of the project. In a poor State like Uganda it is necessary to have local support and create good impression for establishing a newly foreign venture. For establishing business in a corrupted country like Uganda, it was necessary to conform to some unethical practices and specifically the Ugandan ways of doing business. Thus facing Ugandas economical, political and cultural complexity with ethical and U.S corporate perspective couldnt have been an effective strategy to implement the business over there. Thou Martins avoidance of expatriate lifestyle, paying extra payments and nepotism did not conform to HGs culture but in terms of time and money that had been invested on this project Martins work was correct. His connection with the local custom helped HG to get custom clearances quickly. His Participation in the tribal ritual could have been constructed a mockery of tribal customs and also have an effect on Ugandas Christian majority but without attending the ceremony it would have been difficult for HG to rehabilitate the particular tribe from the project site In spite of all the complexities Martin still had achieved the desired result within the given time and budget. Without Martin as a member of the project team it would have been difficult for HG to establish the project in a country like Uganda and complete the preliminary phase of the project.

Finally the results that could have taken place in the absence of Martin would be: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. HGs project may need to be postponed. HG would have to hire either local or foreign professional personnel for the project. Recruitment would not have been cost containment like Martin. Tough to find a combination of personnel with professional, experience and familiarity of host-country. With foreign personnel it would require time, money and effort to overcome the crosscultural literacy first. Recruiting foreign expatriate for the project might not turn as effective in facilitating the project as with local managers, in maintaining the norms, values, beliefs, rules, regulations and culture of Uganda. It would be difficult to manage unethical practices of Uganda. Opposition from Local Authorities, Villagers, Tribal, Christian Majority and Christian Missionaries would be hard to offend

9. Without extra payment and nepotism it would be difficult to hire people or staff because nepotism is a norm in Uganda. 10. Getting local support from authorities and villagers could require time and more money. 11. Without the tribal religious ceremony it would have been difficult for HG to continue its operation in the project site and displace the villagers. 12. In conducting every task like setting office, hiring office personnel, local purchasing, clearing incoming goods through customs, securing immigration permissions, overseeing logistics of getting materials, keeping inventory, helping foreign personnel get settled, establishing operating structure, obtaining license installing telephones and utilities etc would require huge amount of money, time and effort. Even for accomplishing some tasks unethical practices would be necessary to conduct with double payments. 13. Every task would not be completed on time within the total budget.

CONCLUSION: We can say that foreign operations decisions for any multinational corporation are depended on the culture of the host country. Decisions must be made on the basis of situation. After analyzing the case we have come to the following conclusion: 1. A multinational corporation should have clear understanding about the host nation before going for the project. 2. There should be clear guidelines for the employee of the respective company in terms of foreign operation. 3. It is truly necessary to respect other countrys culture. 4. Managerial persons who are working abroad should be geocentric.
