Exam 2010:

Question II-1:

a)

Space time encoder, to achieve full diversity rank. Nt transmitting antennas. channel coefficients to represent the channel power response in each path from one transmit antenna to any receiving antenna. Nr receiver antenna. Space time decoder to decode the received symbols

b)

In case of equal channel coefficients after normalization of the channel coefficients we get :

Comment: the capacity increase with number of receiving antenna, since as Nr increases we receive more versions from multipath component which increase the power and thus SNR which reflects on system capacity. c)

In case of equal channel coefficients after normalization of the channel coefficients we get :

Comment: the capacity doesnt increase with the number of transmit antennas, since there is only one receiving antenna, so we get benefit only from one version of the transmitted signals.

d)

Where Nt=Nr=n

The above expression is capacity for Nt=Nr=n antennas, the capacity increases linearly with n and logarithmically with the SNR, since as n increase number of independent subchannels increase(channel rank) and so we get benefit more for the multipath versions and thus the capacity increases more and more than both TX or RX diversity.

Exam 2009: Question 4-a:

Assumptions: 1-consider a point to point MIMO system model with Nt and Nr receive antenna. 2-independent channels between antennas are flat Rayleigh fading. 3-nosie is AWGN. The transmit signals of the antennas are: X=[X1,X2,,Xnt]T Where X1 to Xnt are the transmitted symbols from the 1st to the last antenna respectively. The total transmitted power is restricted to P, where for every antenna assume power=P/Nt We can model the channel by its complex coefficients which are assumed to be Gaussian distributed random variables to maximize the capacity(from information theory) :

Since we said the Power for every antenna=P/Nt, thus we neglected the attenuations and gains from transmitter to the receiver so the normalization constraint of the channel coefficients is:

The noise is additive white Gaussian noise with zero mean and power sigma^2, and is represented by NrX1 matrix; Thus we can see that the received signal Y can be expressed by:

Y=HX+n
