Choirs and a capella groups serenade bitter hearts

Valentines Day, often evokes bitterness and anger in the lonely Lewis & Clark populace. In the throes of Hallmark cards, chocolate filled hearts and tacky carnations, we find ourselves falling much more quickly out of love than in it. And as all of our insecurities come to an astounding precipice, it is the tongue-in-cheek choir event known as the AntiValentines Day Concert that reminds us that we are not alone in our loneliness. Choral Director Kathy Fitzgibbon has put together a myriad of vocal pieces that will help us forget our troubles and laugh at the undeserved gravity of the Valentines holiday. Involved in this concert are three choirs (the Community Chorale, the Womens Chorus and the Cappella Nova) and four a cappella groups (Momo and the Coop, Section Line Drive, the Ravine Academy and the Merry Weathers). While the a cappella groups are orchestrating and deciding their own songs, Fitzgib-

bon has chosen music for the three large choirs to exemplify not only songs that point out the ersatz quality of Valentines Day, but also that celebrate the idea behind the holiday. The concert should be light-hearted and fun, and will include almost 200 members of the LC community. One of the tunes being sung by Cappella Nova, called Personals, puts a musical spin on text taken from 1970s personal ads, which should prove to be quite the hilarious parody. Another tune, sung by the Community Chorale, is a P.D.Q. Bach tune. P.D.Q. spoofs a serious Renaissance madrigal called My Bonnie Lass, She Smileth, rewriting the music and changing the words to My Bonnie Lass, She Smelleth. The overall goal of this concert is to be a quick-moving showcase of LCs singing groups. According to Fitzgibbon, If people are looking for a fun outing that celebrates and mocks the Valentines holiday, this is it! Saturday, Feb. 12, 8 PM, Evans Auditorium, free admission.
