I recently read Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley. This novel is a continuation to Margaret Mitchel's Gone With the Wind.

The novel begins where Gone With the Wind ended. Scarlett begins in 19th century Georgia, in Atlanta, ten years after the Civil War. It begins with Scarlett at her former sister in law, Melanie's funeral. Ashley, Melanie's widower and Scarlett's former love, tries to throw himself into his wife's grave but Scarlett stops him by throwing herself in between him and the grave. Scarllett is shunned because she put her hands on another man at his wife's grave and she loses all her alliances in Atlanta Society. Scarlett goes to her childhood plantation, Tara, to clear her head, only to find everything different. Her sister, Suellen has taken over the plantation, but not only that, Scarlett's mammy is dying. Scarlett works day and night, taking care of her but she is too sick.
