A Telephone Repair Building Badly ShatteredThomas Doreen Seriously Injured Danger From Dynamite.
A n explosion of combustible gases and au accompanying fire almost entirely destroyed the repair a n d testing shops of the Cleveland Telephone Co. M o n d a y afternoon, and will probably result in t h e death of one of the w o r k m e n . T h e injured man is T h o m a s D o r e e n . a wire dipper and he w a s the only m a n who was injured, .although several others had n a r r o w escapes from cremation. The building destroyed was a two-story brick and frame s t r u c t u r e a t No. 117 Michigan street. I t i s t h e telephone company's workshop and w a s used principally in t e s t i n g lines and a p p a r a t u s and placing insulating compound o a electric wires. T h e upper floor is used for. repairing a p p a r a t u s and t h e ground floor, ill t h e r e a r , is where t h e w i r e s a r c insulated, i t w a s here t h a t the explosion occurred. Y e s t e r d a y afternoon five o r six of t h e w o r k m e n were upstairs a t work a n d Doreen was left in the insulating department. He was dipping coils of wire into the vat of boiling insulating fluid, which from its in. Haaiable n a t u r e is kept in a room, s e p a r a t e from the r e s t of the building. No light is allowed iu. the room other t h a n t h a t given b y an incandescent light. I t is presumed t h a t D o r e e n m u s t h a v e s t r u c k a m a t c h or t h a t Ihe liquid boiled over and r a n into the crocks of the- boiler, setting fire to t h e gas issuing from t h e vat.
