FABRICATION AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON A HEAT PIPE ABSTRACT

A heat pipe is a simple device that can quickly transfer thermal energy from one point to another. They are often referred to as the superconductors" of thermal energy as they possess an extra ordinary heat transfer capability. It utilizes the latent heat of vaporized working fluid instead of the sensible heat. A heat pipe consists of a sealed container, a wick structure, a small amount of working fluid that is just sufficient to saturate the wick and it is in equilibrium with its own vapour. In this experiment, a 300 mm long copper heat pipe is fabricated and a refrigerant is filled at a particular pressure. The temperature profiles are noted by varying the different parameters, to find out the optimum condition at which the heat pipe works. The following parameters have been varied, 1. Input power. (25 W-125W) 2. Coolant flow rate. 3. Type of working fluid. (R-134a and R-22) Heat pipes are used in a wide range of products like air-conditioners, refrigerators, heat exchangers, transistors, capacitors, etc. Heat pipes are also used in laptops to reduce the working temperature for better efficiency. Their application in the field of cryogenics is very significant, especially in the development of space technology.
