Distimo was founded to solve the challenges created by a widely fragmented app store marketplace filled with equally fragmented information and statistics. Distimo was launched shortly after the introduction of the first app store. App stores have clearly shown since that time that they are the way forward for content distribution. The app store model offers an enormous opportunity for developers to get their content out and dramatically improves content discovery by consumers. However, the mobile market has long been characterized by fragmentation, which is also displayed in the wide range of mobile application stores that were launched from 2009 on. Only moderate growth was observed in most of the application stores over the course of the past several months, however overall growth picked up again in March . The Apple App Store for iPhone is the largest store in terms of all applications available however, it was among the slowest growing stores in terms of relative growth in March. Regardless of its low relative growth, the Apple App Store for iPhone was still second only to Google in terms of absolute growth figures. The Google Android Market is the clear leader in terms of free applications as of March 2011. The total number of free applications exceeds that of the Apple App Store for iPhone by more than 10,000, while the number of paid applications available in Google Android Market is barely one-third of the total number of paid applications available in the Apple App Store for iPhone. The Apple App Store for iPad grew by 12% in March to 75,755 applications, of which 34,120 are designated for iPad only. The total number of iOS applications now equals 367,334.

The previous page depicts the current store sizes and growth rates and reveals that some stores experienced higher growth than others. The absolute growth is not necessarily high even though the relative growth can be high. The growth pace of the last three months is used to forecast the absolute sizes of six stores in the coming three months in order to provide more insight into the development of the whole ecosystem. First, the Google Android Market is predicted to have only 40,000 applications less than the Apple App Store for iPhone by the end of June 2011, and will close the remaining gap before the end of July 2011. Second, we predict that the BlackBerry App World will double in size over a six-month period and will most likely be larger than Nokia Ovi Store by the end of May 2011. The last finding is not shown in the graph, although the trend can still be observed. At its current growth rate, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace will be larger than the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World before the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has even been available for a full year. It should be noted that all figures are based purely on the average month-over-month growth figures that could easily accelerate or slow down. Still, it depicts a good overview of what we believe may happen.

The development of the Apple App Store for iPad since its launch on April 3, 2010 is depicted in the above figure. It will be interesting to see if, with regard to applications, the newly released BlackBerry QNX and Google Android Honeycomb will develop in a similar manner. It is interesting to note that applications on the iPad have become more expensive over time, while we note a trend in the opposite direction for other application stores. The proportion of applications featuring in-app purchases decreased over time as well. This is likely because the games category (which has generally had a high in-app purchase adoption rate) has lost some of its prominence to other categories. Many of the most popular applications released at launch have remained popular over the entire year and are still among the top 25 most popular applications as of March 2011. These include Pages, iBooks and Penultimate.

The table above shows the most popular Apple App Store for iPad publishers in March 2011 that also publish outside the Apple ecosystem on other platforms. These publishers are likely to publish on the new tablet platforms as they are already experienced in multi-platform development. Chillingo, Electronic Arts and Gameloft already have applications available for the iPad, Android and BlackBerry, and may be able to port the existing applications to the new platforms. For others like, Rovio Mobile Ltd., who have avoided the BlackBerry platform thus far, the new tablet may provide a trigger for them to start developing applications for the BlackBerry or Android platforms. Many of the top publishers on the iPad already publish on non-Apple platforms. Fiftyeight percent of the 50 most popular iPad publishers developed applications for one or more other platforms as of March 2011. Ninety-four percent of the 50 most popular iPad publishers are considered to be cross-store publishers when the Apple App Store for iPhone and Apple Mac App Store are seen as independent stores.
