Chapter 7: Series

EXERCISE THREE: INFINITE GEOMETRIC SERIES

Find the common ratio, and the sum to infinity where it exists, for each of the following GPs. (a) (c )

2 4 3, , , .... 3 27

(b)

1 1 1 , , , .... 3 6 12

4, 4.8, 5.76, ..

Find the sum of each of the following infinite geometric series (a)

4 + 2 + 1 + ....

(b)

31+

1 ... 3

The first term of a GP exceeds the second term by 1 while its sum to infinity is 16. Find the third term.

The second term of a GP is 24 and its sum to infinity is 100. Find the two possible values of the common ratio.

An infinite geometric series has a finite sum of 256. The sum of the first 3 terms is 224. What is the value of the third term?
