Is that what a higher education is worth?

Thats how much the University of Western Ontario wants to pay its Postdoctoral Associates. Sixty-eight cents above the minimum wage for workers with PhDs! Does that sound fair to you? Postdoctoral employees at the university have been trying for two years to negotiate a first collective agreement with UWO. Talks are now bogged down over wages, because UWO only wants to guarantee $10.93 per hour for a 44-hour work week, averaged over four weeks. These are highlyeducated researchers whose cutting-edge work helps put UWO on the map as a worldclass facility. Postdoctoral employees have spent at least a decade earning a higher education: four years of undergraduate studies for a Bachelors, two years to earn an Masters, followed by at least four years of work to graduate with a PhD. UWO wants to pay Postdoctoral Fellows $21.57 an hour less than it pays its own graduate student teaching assistants! Even UWOs housekeepers and clerks make a higher hourly wage than postdoctoral employees. These workers make valuable contributions to the university, but surely postdocs shouldnt be paid less. Tell UWO to return to the bargaining table with a fair and reasonable wage offer for its Postdoctoral Associates.
