CONSUMER - An individual who buys products or services for personal use and not for manufacture or resale. A consumer is someone who can make the decision whether or not to purchase an item at the store, and someone who can be influenced by marketing and advertisements. Any time someone goes to a store and purchases a toy, shirt, beverage, or anything else, they are making that decision as a consumer. CONSUMERISM - A social and economic order that is based on the systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods and services in ever greater amounts. Movement seeking to protect and inform consumers by requiring such practices as honest packaging and advertising, product guarantees, and improved safety standards.

A modern movement for the protection of the consumer against useless, inferior, or dan gerous products, misleading advertising, unfair pricing, etc.
