Digital Transmission Systems

Digital transmission systems and hierarchies have been based on multiplexing signals, Transmission Systems are divided in to 2 types. They are
1) Plesiochronous digital hierarchy (PDH) 2) Synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH)

Plesiochronous digital hierarchy (PDH)

Plesiochronous means running at almost the same speed. Different PDH bit rates used in different countries in the world is shown below.

Draw Backs of PDH systems

No network management system. If bit rate is >140 MB no standards. Homogeneity of equipment. Segregation of channels is difficult. Different countries in the world have different standards.

Digital Multiplex Sub System.

 The digital multiplex system can be divided into three stages. Secondorder multiplexer. Thirdorder multiplexer or second/third order Fourthorder multiplexer. These threestaged multiplexers digitize and multiplex signals into following digital bit streams of 1. 2048 kbit/s, 2. 8448 kbit/s, 3. 34368 kbit/s 4. 139,264 kbit/s.

Optical Line Transmission Subsystem

It convert electrical signals, which are received from Multiplexer into Optical signals. Capacity of Optical Fibre System in PDH Conventional (i) 8 Mb/s 120 channels (4 PCM) (ii) 34 Mb/s 480 channels (16 PCM) (iii) 140 Mb/s 1920 channels (64 PCM) (iv) 565 Mb/s 7680channels(256PCM) Optimux 2/34 Mb/s optimux 2/140 Mb/s optimux
