Power Factor Correction Using a Series Active Filter

Objective:
To develop a compact, low cost, and high efficiency power factor correction for single-phase diode bridge rectifier.

System Schematic
Half-bridge Rectifier
LS vC iL - + vL+ 2VO =250V VO

Features:
Lower devices rating, which reduces cost and switching loss; No additional inductor is needed, line impedance is enough for most cases; The proposed double hysteresis control reduces switching frequency significantly, which leads to higher efficiency.

Application Examples::
Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, or other adjustable speed motor drives fed by single-phase utility power.

Experimental Results Principle of Hysteresis Control

The polarity of diL/dt can be controlled when | vs| > VO - Vdc is satisfied. Thus the series inverter with enough dc voltage is able to make the line current follow the desired reference and limit the harmonic component of the line current.
