Comparing Non-Steroid Hormone and Steroid Hormone Mechanism of Action

Steroid hormone Non-steroid hormone Similarities: Both types of hormones act on target cells with receptors specific for them. The hormones bind to hormone receptors. Hormone can easily pass through the plasma membrane and enter the target cell. Hormone binds to the protein receptor in the cytoplasm or nucleus to form a hormonereceptor complex. The complex formed does not activate adenylyl cyclase. There is no production of cAMP. No activation of protein kinase by cAMP. No activation of enzymes by protein kinase. There is no cascade effect. The hormone-receptor complex activates genes. Transcription followed by translation takes place. Produces long-term effects. Hormone cannot pass through the plasma membrane and therefore cannot enter the cell. Hormone binds to the protein receptor in the plasma membrane to form a hormonereceptor complex. The complex formed activates adenylyl cyclase in the plasma membrane. The enzyme adenylyl cyclase converts ATP to cAMP. The cAMP produced activates protein kinase in the target cell. The protein kinase activates other enzymes. Cascade effect occurs to amplify the effect of hormone. The hormone-receptor complex does not activate genes. Transcription and translation does not take place. Produces short-term effects.
