    I am interested in the South American country of Venezuela and its leader Hugo Chavez.

    More specifically, I am interested in how Chavez s current health problems are affecting the current political situation in Venezuela. His consistent antiAmerican rhetoric has always raised eyebrows but I wanted to get to know him better. Recently, Chavez had a cancerous tumor removed in Cuba, although he refuses to announce what type of cancer it is (NYT). Chavez did not attend Venezuelan Independence Celebration Ceremony in Caracas due this health concerns. Instead, he remained in his Presidential Palace and made a speech from the balcony. President Chvez is the most prominent example of a common Latin American phenomenon called the caudillo, in which rulers base their legitimacy not on any sort of allegiance to institutions, but rather on developing a strong and emotional bond with Latin America's masses, especially the poor (WSJ).
