Book Drive to Help Incarcerated Mothers in New York State Prisons

Sponsored by Assemblywoman

Naomi Rivera

Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life.

Mortimer J. Adler

More than 83% of women sent to New Yorks prisons in 2008 were convicted of non-violent offenses. Almost 80,000 children have a parent in New Yorks prisons, including nearly 5,240 children with an incarcerated mother. Nearly 54% of women prisoners do not have a high school diploma. Over 35% of women in prison read at an 8th grade level or below. 90% of women in prison have been sexually or physically abused. We can help these women to improve their lives and that of their children through reading.
