In the centre of Memorial Park is a fountain in the shape of a hexagon. Workers are ringing the fountain in hexagonal tiles. The first ring of tiles is made of black tiles. The next ring is made of white tiles. The next black, and so on. How many hexagonal tiles will the workers use in the fourth ring? In all, the workers completed 15 rings. What colour were the tiles in the fifteenth ring? How many did they need for this ring?

The 1st ring has 6 tiles and black The 2nd ring has 12 tiles and The 3rd ring has 18 tiles and black We can simplify the data into: Odd number of tiles ring is black and even number of tiles ring is white. The pattern is the multiple of two: 6, 12, 18, 24,30.90
How many hexagonal tiles will the workers use in the fourth ring? 6 x 4 = 24 tiles What colour were the tiles in the fifteenth ring? 15 is an odd number, therefore it is black How many did they need for this ring (15th)? 6 x 15 = 90 tiles
