Using Mac for Beginners

This document explains how to use this laptop if you are a Mac newbie. The list below shows the windows command and the equivalent in Mac. Individual windows do not have menus as in Windows. Menu bar is common and appears on the top of the screen. Windows Function Alt-Tab Equivalent in Mac Command (the one with apple symbol) + tab Use F9 to use the Expose function it will display all open screens Command + Q Note: Using the X close button on the window does not completely close the application Use Finder. Applications can be found in the Applications folder. You may also click on the blue spotlight icon on the right top corner to open the search window. Remember, you can not copy and paste files in Finder. You have to drag and drop. You may use Safari or Firefox. Click on the blue apple icon on the top menu bar and choose system preferences Use Command-Right arrow/left-arrow to navigate in FF and Safari Delete Use two fingers on the scrollpad to scroll I have installed VNC server (in Applications). Use a VNCViewer for windows to remotely connect to this machine after running VNCServer. I have installed Microsoft Remote Desktop client which can be used to remotely connect to other Windows desktops. I have installed NeoOffice (based on OpenOffice). Command-S Ctrl-Click You can not grab the sides to resize a window. Use the right bottom corner to resize. Command-Shift-3 -> Entire screen capture Command-Shift-4 -> A region PNG file is created on the desktop. You may also use Grab utility in Finder->Go->Utilities
