(a) Derive an expression for modulation index for single-tone amplitude modulated wave. (b) 90 kHz B.W is to accommodate six AM broadcast simultaneously. What maximum modulating frequency must each station be limited to? 2. (a) Prove that the balanced modulator produces an O/P consisting of sidebands only with the carrier removed. (b) Calculate the % of power saving for a DSB-SC signal for the (i) 100 % modulation. (ii) 50% modulation. 3. (a) Explain how SSB signal is generated using phase discrimination method. (b) How is VSB signal demodulated using envelop detection? 4. (a) Draw the block diagram of balanced frequency discrimination and explain it for demodulation of FM signal. (b) Given an angle-modulated signal x(t) = 10 cos(2(106 )t + 0.1 sin(103 )t) i. Considering xc (t) as a PM signal with kp = 10, obtain m(f). ii. Considering xc (t) as FM signal with kf = 10 nd m(t). 5. (a) Derive an expression for the gure of merit r when the modulating signal f(t) is a single tone sinusoid given by f (t) = ma AU SWm t where ma is modulation index and A is carrier amplitude. Fine the value of r when the depth of modulation is: (i) 100%. (ii) 50%. (iii) 30%. (b) Why threshold eect is more serious in FM as compared to AM? How it can be improved with preemphasis & deemphasis circuits? 6. (a) With the help block diagram, explain how a broadcast AM transmitter functions. List the specications of broadcast type AM transmitter. (b) Dierentiate low level modulation & high level modulation type transmitters. 7. (a) What is a TRF Receiver? What are its drawbacks?
