iPad at work in health care Kaweah Delta

Helping doctors make more informed decisions, faster
Providing comprehensive health care services across a broad area of Californias rural Central Valley, the Kaweah Delta Health Care District makes a point of ensuring that its 280 physicians can stay engaged with their patients and connected with essential resources, no matter where they go. Mobile devices and laptops such as the iPad, iPod and MacBook, powered by virtual computing from Citrix, enable Kaweah Delta to erase physical distance and technological hurdles to deliver a truly seamless experience for its medical staffand enable more informed medical decisions for its patients. We focus on something we call the six rights: getting the right information to the right person, at the right place, at the right time, in the right format, to ensure the right value, explains Dave Gravender, CIO for the Kaweah Delta Health Care District. Citrix Receiver makes that possible. Kaweah Delta Health Care District uses Citrix Receiver to deliver the full range of clinical applications and data, from patient X-rays and EKG telemetry to a labor and delivery monitoring system, to any Internet-connected device doctors choose to use, in any location. Doctors can use an iPad, an iPod or any other device to receive the same virtual desktop they use in their ofce, says Gravender. They can get the information they need more quickly and easily to make decisions in real-time, even if theyre far from the hospital itself, and that improves the care we can provide to the patient.

Anything we can do that helps doctors get better information, faster, will help us in the treatment of our patients. Citrix Receiver makes it easier for us to fulll that mission. Its been exciting for us, and frankly, its been a lot of fun getting all this attention for something thats so simple to do.
Dave Gravender, CIO, Kaweah Delta Health Care District

Freeing health care from hardware

In the past, the medical professionals of Kaweah Delta relied on xed desktops or computers on wheels in their facilities. There were some workstations that were faster than others, and they always had a line of people waiting to use them, recalls Gravender. We wanted people to be able to have the best possible experience no matter what they were using. A longtime believer in virtual computing, the hospital district had already virtualized its applications to improve usability, consistency and manageability throughout its organization. With the introduction of the iPad, Kaweah Delta saw the opportunity to reach new levels of mobility and convenience. We received our iPad tablets on a Saturday, downloaded Citrix Receiver from the App Store and started running a virtual desktop on them in about twenty minutes, says Gravender. Doctors are also allowed to bring in any other type of devicelaptop, tablet or smartphone. Citrix Receiver allows our IT team to say yes, from a bring-your-own-computer perspective, were very open-minded about what devices our doctors use to access our systems, explains Gravender.

Better quality of care, better quality of life

The doctors of Kaweah Delta now enjoy seamless access and improved productivity as they make their rounds and travel from facility to facility. A doctor can begin work on a desktop workstation, leave mid-session to respond to a patient, then log into the same virtual desktop from his iPad or any other device to resume exactly where hed left off and complete his work. In accordance with the six rights principle, doctors can now see real-time patient data regardless of their location: at another hospital, at home, even out grocery shopping or at a rest area on the freeway. Before, if a nurse wanted to show a doctor a patients EKG strip or X-ray, it meant each of them had to get to a fax machine. Now, he can just log in with his iPad and see it directly, then give the nurse the appropriate instructions. Our doctors tell us that having information more readily available helps them make more informed decisions, more quickly, says Gravender. From a lifestyle perspective, it also makes a big difference for them to be able to nish their documentation and sign off on charts when theyre home with their families instead of working late at the hospital. Patients appreciate the way improved communication empowers them with new understanding of their own cases. The compact, convenient form of the iPad makes it an ideal way to show patients information from X-rays to lm of a cardiac blockage to recommendations for follow-up care. Kaweah Delta pharmacists conducting their rounds and meeting with doctors to review patient cases use virtual computing to access evidence-based information from providers like Thompson-Reuters to guide their recommendations for drugs and dosages. Dieticians and service hosts use the iPad to discuss meal options with patients and take their orders. Because patient information remains in the datacenter and never resides on the user device itself, virtual computing enables Kaweah Delta to combine high mobility with reliable condentiality and HIPAA compliance. As a result, the district is now testing the use of the iPad for outpatient care as well; even if an iPad is lost en route to a home visit, there is no risk to patient privacy. Even non-medical personnel at Kaweah Delta have joined the virtual computing revolution. We talk about the six rights for every member of our organization not just care providers, but also nancial analysts, administrators, IT staff and everyone else, says Gravender.

Doing more, more easily

Not only does virtual computing help Kaweah Delta deliver better care; it also helps the districts IT budget go further than ever. Gravender is now replacing $7,500 computers-on-wheels and $2,500 tablet PCs with the more mobile, easier-to-use iPad that provides the same quality of experience at a small fraction of the cost. The ability to do more within our cost constraints is a key component of the value of virtual computing, he says. Kaweah Delta continues to look ahead to new possibilities. Wherever the technology takes us, whatever the next big device turns out to beroll-up tablets, 3D systemsas long as its got Citrix Receiver installed on it, well be able to connect it to our environment easily, says Gravender. Anything we can do that helps doctors get better information, faster, will help us in the treatment of our patients. Citrix Receiver makes it easier for us to fulll that mission. Its been exciting for us, and frankly, its been a lot of fun getting all this attention for something thats so simple to do.

iPad at Work in Education Derby Schools

More opportunities for more students in more places
Derby Public Schools is always looking for new and better ways to prepare its students for success. Located in suburban Kansas, the K 12 school district uses a variety of devices such as the iPad, iPod and MacBook powered by virtual computing from Citrix to help its students tap into the resources they need no matter where they arein a classroom, at home, in a public library or anywhere elsefor a more engaging, accessible and effective educational experience.

I like to think were an example of whats now possible. I dont know about being a pioneer; in all honesty, were just trying to do whats right for the kids in Derby.
Drew Lane, Director of Technology, Derby Schools

According to Drew Lane, director of technology for the school district, Research shows that kids learn faster, retain more and make better conceptual connections when theyre engaged. For this generation, that means using a device thats interesting and exciting to themlike the iPad. Using Citrix Receiver to deliver a broad range of virtualized applications, from word processing to digital media to testing and assessment software, Derby Public Schools can free its students from the constraints of computer labs and school hours and make education a more mobile and seamless part of their lives. We wanted to move away from xed desktop computers and have technology come to our studentsnot the other way around, says Lane. The result: personalized education that better ts student lifestyles and expectations means that Derbys students are better prepared to reach their goals, from college admissions to nding a rst job.

Taking education beyond the classroom

In one sense, Derby Public Schools was merely catching up with its own students, who were already coming of age in a world of anywhere, anytime technology spanning devices of every description. Why should their schools learning resources be accessible only on-site during school hours, and only on standard-issue, often out-of-date PCs? We want to give students the mobility they expect, and make all their resourcesschool applications as well as their own dataavailable from wherever they are, whenever they need it, with whatever device they want to use, says Lane. In the past, students who were unable to attend school were largely out of the loop. With virtual computing, all they need to participate is a computing devicea school-issued iPad or MacBook, their own family computer, a public library computer in any locationand an Internet connection. For one student, this made an especially big difference. We had a little girl who was diagnosed with cancer and was taking chemotherapy, and we were concerned that she might be exposed to the u in the classroom, which could be fatal, Lane explains. She loves school and being around her classmates, and we didnt want to keep her away for an extended period. With Citrix and an iPad, Derby Public Schools made sure she didnt fall behind in her work and helped her stay in touch with her friends and classmates at the same time.

Additionally, when budget cuts forced the cancellation of summer school for most grades, Derby Public Schools took advantage of its Citrix environment to provide summer students with self-guided resources so that they could be on the same page as their peers when classes resumed in the fall.

More applications, more opportunities to learn and grow

Derby Public Schools uses virtual computing to deliver a broad range of educational resources to students through the iPad, from Microsoft Ofce to specialized applications including Kidspiration, Type to Learn and MIDI-based music programseven programs and web sites requiring Windows browser plug-ins, which wouldnt otherwise be compatible with the iPad. Evidence of the difference made by a more engaging computing experience can be found in the stars. Some of our second-graders use the Star Walk astronomy application to engage in content that, at rst blush, seems well beyond their age, says Lane. But the application is so intuitive, it gives you a way to start introducing those concepts. It really broadens the horizons of the student. Using Citrix Receiver on iPod devices creates new opportunities for classroom participation by enabling students to record voice responses to their teachers questions. In this way, teachers can hear from every child in the classnot just the ones who raise their handseven before they learn how to write. Were always asking what else we can do with our new environmentwere kind of greedy that way, says Lane. A Digital Life class provided yet one more opportunity. If the school isnt open and the student wants to work on their project, no problemweve virtualized the digital media applications used in the class for high performance and availability both inside and outside the network. What if the student doesnt have a computer or connectivity at home? They simply visit a public library and work there. If you can nd a device and get connected, you can do your stuff.

IT says yes
Its not only the students of Derby Public Schools who are realizing new possibilities. From an IT perspective, we can say yes more often, says Lane. We can give students experiences that engage and inspire them without compromising security and safety. Virtual computing has also helped Derby Public Schools meet a crucial challenge familiar to every public school system: providing an outstanding education even as budget cuts pare resources to the bone. We were purchasing really nice desktops and they were being used for nothing more than web surng, word processing and a few curriculum titles, says Lane. I was looking for a way to reduce cost and get more bang for my buck. Now, the school can replace end-of-life PCs with the less expensive iPad, iPod or MacBooka change which has cut desktop refresh costs in half. Meanwhile, new ideas keep coming. We get a lot of requests and suggestions from teachers as they start thinking about whats now possible, Lane says. One example: using an iPad as a translator for children learning English as a second language to bridge the gap when students and teachers dont share a common tongue.

For all the new learning opportunities Derby Public Schools has created for its students, Lane keeps the systems achievements in perspective. I like to think were an example of whats now possible. I dont know about being a pioneer; in all honesty, were just trying to do whats right for the kids in Derby. As Citrix Receiver, the iPad and other devices take their place in schools from coast to coast, virtual computing is the right answer for a new generation of students.
