Arc Flash Hazard Analysis

An Example of Using IEEE Std 1584TM-2002

Arc Flash Evaluation using IEEE Std 1584TM-2002 includes the following calculation steps: Step 1 - Calculate the bolted three-phase fault current at each bus in the power system, Ibf, and the bolted fault current through each protective device, Ibf branch. Step 2 - Calculate the Arcing Fault Current, Ia, at the bus and Ia branch through each protective device. For bus system nominal voltage < 1 kV, and fault magnitudes 700A Ibf 106kA
log10 ( I a ) = K + 0.662(log10 ( I bf )) + 0.0966V + 0.000526G + 0.5588V (log10 ( I bf )) 0.00304G (log10 ( I bf ))

where: Ia K Ibf V G is arcing fault current at the bus is 0.153 for open configuration and is 0.097 for box configuration is bolted fault current (three-phase sym. rms kA at the bus) is bus voltage in kV is bus bar gap between conductors in mm

For bus system nominal voltage 1 kV, and fault magnitudes 700A Ibf 106kA

log10 ( I a ) = 0.00402 + 0.983(log10 ( I bf ))

Therefore:
I a = 10 log10 ( Ia ) , I a branch = I a I bf branch I bf

Where:
Ibf branch Ia branch

is the Bolted Fault Current through each protective device. is the arcing fault current through each protective device.

Step 3 - Determine the Trip/Delay time for fuses from the Time Current Coordination Curve (TCC). For all standard fuses with both opening and clearing curves available, read from the clearing time curve.
